Voter trends and turn out - What if Dems... |
|
Studied these numbers and figured out who consistently votes and guided the message toward them more effectively?
I'm not saying give up on important issues, but what if Dems spent more time studying voter profiles and pushing their message toward the people who actually vote more on a consistent basis? And if so, what would those demographics be?
For example, I think human rights and the environment are huge issues to young people, especially college educated people, and getting these issues out there more might bring out more youthful voters. Look at Kerry. For all of those who did look at the numbers, Kerry did bring out more younger voters. The war in Iraq was probably most important to them and this reflected in a larger youth voter turnout.
Another example is how in many pension style jobs, a secure pension and health care upon retirement are very important and often times in jeopardy.
In contrast, AND JUST AS AN EXAMPLE, Dems are always pushing for minimum wage increases. Of this group, how many are reliable voters? If the demographics show that minimum wage voters do not turn out that high in elections, should as much capital be expended on this versus that of Hispanic voting reach out efforts?
(And don't give me the core belief argument - I'm not talking about lessening our ethics or core values, only going after votes in a smarter way.)

it seems the answer to your question, in my experience, is elderly morally-conservative retired people...you know, the same ones that vote GOP out of fear. Fear is a strong motivator.

of our donations is spent on. This info is shared with the candidates. The problem - the candidates have their own ideas about what the voters need to hear.
Also, our candidates can't stay on message the way repugs do - our people are too smart and don't like to repeat the same old drivel over and over again. Therein lies the problem - casual citizens don't start listening until 5 days before they need to vote and if they don't hear the same message at least three times a day they can't take it in.
