What does Bush do of Miers is rejected? |
|
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 11:11 AM by neoteric lefty
Any SCOTUS nomination that is rejected is a huge blow for any administration. We know Bush is already wounded from everything that has blown up in his face, but what would be his next course of action? I think he would try to rally his base because if Miers is defeated, conservatives would have a big part in it. If he goes after the base and nominates a Scalia-esque :shudder: nominee, will he have enough support to push that person over then hump? I think he would be in the fight of his life if he did that. Hopefully, Dems would not be scared into voting for him/her like they did for Roberts. Two failed nominations could spell doom for the rest of Bush's administration and the Repubs in Congress. Whatever happens, the Dems need to grow a spine and really go after any nomination that is not fit for the court.

Hopefully she'll regret giving him the White House by the time this is over.

7. He'll put up some raging asshole neo-con as retribution |
|
to an ungrateful nation. Paging Grover Norquist...
Then the GOP in Congress will be 'forced' to reject the nominee, so as to give themselves some props in time for '06. Then another so-called moderate nominee will get put up, probably much like Harriet, and everyone's gerbil-like attention span will have shifted elsewhere by then and they'll get in. Win-win, all around for Bush and the GOP.
This script has already been written.

9. Nominate basically the same person again, and dare the Senate to |
|
reject him twice. The pressure will be on the Senate for the second nomination. The Dems will feel pressured to approve to show that they aren't just obstructionist. The neocons will be pressured even more by the Repub Party not to rebuff their president twice.
I sometimes think that's his plan. He nominated Miers so the Senate will reject her, and then think his second choice (who is really the one he's trying to get on the court) is better. He can nominate a Scalia type with strong judicial history, and skate him through.
Who knows, though? I have trouble believing anyone in BushCo really wants Miers on SCOTUS, but who knows what's really going on.

12. He could go for a "safe" extremist judge |

I can think of one man who would easily be confirmed by the Senate (because he was one of them :eyes:) and who would also appease the religious right:
John Ashcroft.

Justice Ashcroft. Ewww. No freedom of speech, no right to privacy, but church and state can go hand and hand. Scary thought.
Now I can't get Ashcroft's damn "Let the Eagle Soar" song out of my head. Damnit!
