Dems needs a midterm convention in 2006 - OHIO
Should be the place.

I know this has been talked about here the past few days, I still think it is a great idea, and I think OHIO would be a great place!!!

Please e-mail the DNC asking them to put one on. We can make history if we do it, this could become a tradition forever, just like the other conventions, God knows we have alot to say in '06.

1. Right in Columbus too.
Franklin county is very important to our prospects in Ohio.

3. columbus OH - mid-term democratic convention
great idea (thanks walter) and great location...OH is the key, as in the 04 election, if we can flip it (and keep our own) we'll have the electoral majority, and a great big stake planted into the midwest, where it is an absolute must that we dominate...to keep the electoral majority.

4. They used to do the convention every 2 years
I know I am too young to remember them, I didn't really notice much about politics until 1992, I am only 24 now.

this would be a good idea though.

and I think Ohio would be a great place to have it.

6. Midterms a bad idea
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 07:45 PM by FightinNewDem
They had them up until 1992; a good friend of mine attended the final one.

DNC chairman Paul Kirk ditched them following the Mondale debacle of 1984. The mid-terms had become something of a public relations horror show. The events were increasingly dominated by constituency groups, with delegates pushing very narrow issue agendas that tended to make the party appear far, far less than the sum of its parts. There was a collection of narrow demands, but no overarching, appealing mainstream message.

Let the unofficial party groups such as the DLC, DFA, Campaign for America's Future, etc, go to Columbus and New Orleans. The DLC held its annual meeting in Columbus this past summer, and actually drew very positive coverage in the local media, which ultimately helps Dems of all ideological stripes.

7. I think a physical convention is a bad idea
But some modification of this idea that proposes an interactive session between Dem voters and Dem elected officials is a good idea. It would be a good way to showcase any Dem Contract with America.

That would involve message discipline and displays of unity. Oh dear.

5. Cleveland
Columbus is chock full of Republicans and Dems who think they need to be friends with them. Columbus is the place where good Dem strategies go to die.

Cleveland or Cuyahoga County would be better.

8. A National Convention Campaign
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 01:22 AM by Kitsune
Instead of having a convention in just one city, there should be a travelling convention that hits every single state in the union. The purpose shouldn't just be to hammer out the party platform and such, it should be treated as an opportunity to get the message out.

and so do I- though NOT in Ohio. Too much controversy over the Senate race there.

The Dems HAVE TO NATIONALIZE THE ELECTION.

If they don't, they'll lose again. Dean would have done that- Kerry couldn't or wouldn't- in many cases, he actually legitimized Republican policies- which one reason why is why the Republicans picked up seats.

I'd say pick a nice safe and uncontroversial place like Seattle and lay out a plan. Put together some bold plans and for God's sake- don't pull another Kerry/Dukakis- bash the shit out of the Republicans.

That's what people are waiting for- someone with a little courage to stand up against all of these outrages.
