DNC: No More Reindeer Games |

No More Reindeer Games
Washington, DC - Four years after 9/11 and three years after the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the Bush Administration still has not come up with a comprehensive plan to address the myriad potential threats to our nation. Recently disclosed emails between disgraced former FEMA head Michael Brown and other officials during Hurricane Katrina "show that the government's response plan, two years in the making, began breaking down even before Katrina hit the Gulf Coast." The emails also highlighted disputes between Brown's staff and other Administration officials, with one email noting, "Let them play their raindeer games as long as they are not turning around and tasking us with their stupid questions." 10/18/05]
And, as plans to protect our nation's vulnerable targets move ahead at a glacial pace, the White House still refuses to stand up to big corporate interests in the name of public safety. As the New York Times editorialized, "The Bush administration talks tough about domestic security, but when reasonable safety measures clash with the interests of big industries, it goes soft." 10/17/05]
As President Bush signs the homeland security appropriations bill today, the Democratic National Committee hopes that the White House will address important problems that plague our efforts to keep Americans safe.
"Four years after 9/11 and three years after the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, Americans feel less safe in the wake of the Bush Administration's failures," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Josh Earnest. "Hurricane Katrina showed America that the White House still hasn't come up with an effective plan to deal with a large-scale national disaster or domestic terror attack. And, they have failed to stand up to their corporate cronies when it comes to securing America's vulnerable industries and landmarks. Together we can do better. Congress and the American people deserve real answers and real leadership from their Commander-in-Chief. Democrats want to put politics aside and make the tough choices to keep our country secure."
