Cover-Up Issue Is Seen as Focus in Leak Inquiry
By DAVID JOHNSTON
Published: October 21, 2005

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 - As he weighs whether to bring criminal charges in the C.I.A. leak case, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the special counsel, is focusing on whether Karl Rove, the senior White House adviser, and I. Lewis Libby Jr., chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney, sought to conceal their actions and mislead prosecutors, lawyers involved in the case said Thursday.

Among the charges that Mr. Fitzgerald is considering are perjury, obstruction of justice and false statement - counts that suggest the prosecutor may believe the evidence presented in a 22-month grand jury inquiry shows that the two White House aides sought to cover up their actions, the lawyers said.

Mr. Rove and Mr. Libby have been advised that they may be in serious legal jeopardy, the lawyers said, but only this week has Mr. Fitzgerald begun to narrow the possible charges. The prosecutor has said he will not make up his mind about any charges until next week, government officials say.

With the term of the grand jury expiring in one week, though, some lawyers in the case said they were persuaded that Mr. Fitzgerald had all but made up his mind to seek indictments. None of the lawyers would speak on the record, citing the prosecutor's requests not to talk about the case.

1. I've been tempering my entusiasm...

trying to avoid potential letdown.

But it really looks like something positive is going to happen here.

And it's Friday. :toast:

11. I've been trying to keep my hopes in check too
but the more I've been hearing lately, the more I keep hoping this goes all the way to the top, and blows this thing wide open ... and I should probably stop aiming this high because if it ends up going no higher than Rove and Libby (if that) I know I'm going to be disappointed....

9. The term "Republican" is a synonym for "liar"

I hope the whole criminal cabal goes down. I think Rove will squeal like the prison bitch he is. As soon as he realizes how much evidence has been gathered, and as he sees the writing on the wall, he might rat out G. W. Fraud and the corporate pimp Cheney.

Deep down Rove must be thinking, "Oh my God, my ass might end up being sold for a pack of cigarettes." LOL.

17. I have alwasy thought that saying one was "republican"
or conservative was a socially acceptable - PC way, if you will - of saying one is a greedy, ignorant, selfish, homhophobic, sexist racist f***. I think that now more than ever.

5. Yeah, I'm wondering that myself.
Time to start praying to St. Jude (patron saint of hopeless cases). It looks as though they're facing indictments, maybe multiple indictments, but we won't know for sure until the nice young Chicago singer sings, likely next week. I'm hopeful, but not chilling the champagne just yet. In fact, I don't even have any champagne yet. Plenty of time to run out and buy some if/when it happens. The suspense is KILLING me, though!

Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 01:42 PM by npincus
1. were these the so-called "letters of warning" that are issued when one is being considered for indictment?

2. Who ELSE got a warning letter?

14. Good find! I think it is significant because Websites need info
to disseminate, don't they?

If Fitz was planning no indictments etc., why would he need a Website?

He's preparing to post information!
