Bush Compares Terror War to Reagan's Fight

By DEB RIECHMANN
The Associated Press
Friday, October 21, 2005; 11:07 PM

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- President Bush on Friday compared the war against terrorism to Ronald Reagan's battle against communism and vowed that the United States would prevail over Islamic extremists just as it did in the showdown with the Soviet Union. "Like the ideology of communism, Islamic radicalism is doomed to fail," Bush said.

The president spoke at the ribbon-cutting of a pavilion featuring a gleaming Air Force One at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. He participated in a wreath-laying at the grave of the revered Republican and basked in warm wishes from former first lady Nancy Reagan.

"We're great fans of Nancy Reagan," Bush said standing before the Boeing 707 that carried Reagan and six other presidents. "We admire her strength. We admire the love she has for her husband, and we're grateful for her friendship." Despite the cheerful ceremony, Bush's visit rankled some California Republicans. They felt his appearances were poorly timed so close to the Nov. 8 special election for statewide initiatives that Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has pushed as part of a campaign to change state government.

While he is a Reagan admirer, Bush is in a far different position politically than the late president was at this time in his eight-year tenure. Bush's job approval rating has dipped below 40 percent, while Reagan's approval rating was at 63 percent in October 1985. Bush's popularity in California is low, part of the reason that Schwarzenegger was a no-show at a $1 million fundraiser attended by the president Thursday night and the Reagan library event the next day.

2. Actually, this time, he's right...
... both the "war on terror" and Reagan's campaign against the "evil empire" were put-up jobs, designed to fill the pockets of defense contractors, scare the shit out of the public and get the two of `em re-elected.

4. The Soviet Block was supposed to pulverize us, but they just faded away...
...in the late 1980s. So anti-communism had a profound misinformation and warmongering campaign of its own. Ask the vets from Vietnam who still suffer from Agent Orange--if you can find a survivor.

7. And both of them caused such a huge deficit.....
that the economy will be reeling for decades to come. St. Ronnie's deficit spending was finally reigned in by Bill Clinton, but before you can say, "WMD" the bush baby put us right back where we were and worse. The "don't tax but spend anyway" Republicans are putting this country in a place so low KKKarl Rove can't even get there and of course it will take another Democrat to "raise taxes" (read; make the rich pay their fair share) to get us out of it, again.

Reagan was a HORRIBLE president, but he's the patron saint of Resluglicans everywhere because he fucked over the middle class in favor of the rich. I never thought it possible, but bush is MUCH WORSE than Reagan and he's taking this country to a place we dare not go. And all he can say is, "stay the course"....... because other than taxing the rich fairly, which will NEVER happen on his watch, he's out of options.

3. Reagan had a showdown with communism when it was already...
on its way out. bush and his showdown with terrorism has made it worse. I guess Nancy Reagan is now having a love fest with bush because he is praising her beloved husband. She is looking at bush the same way she looked at her husband and that is scary.

5. yeah, they're both bullshit
meant to do nothing but

a) scare the shit out of americans in the hope they'll blindly vote for the republicans

b) distract americans from fact that the republicans are robbing them blind

c) give repubs way to silence all criticism of them by trying to associate critics with the enemy.

I could go on. But this is a good comparison because both Reagan and Bush are full of shit, oh yeah, and both are war criminals to boot!

6. Well, they have this in common:
they both took credit for something they didn't do, bringing democracy to strife-torn regions across the world.

9. Most pop. country in the world is still Com. Is that fade?
I do not think terrorist are the same. Terrorist is a means to an end but none of the ends have ever been the same, such as become a Marxist country. Each group has its own aim. We have had terrorist in this country and they were 180 degrees off of anything some of these terrorist wanted. There will always be people with no power who are willing to do any thing to any one to get what they want.

11. Reagan's battle? Republicans really don't know history do they?
The heavy lifting in beating the Communists was done by Truman and Eisenhower. Everyone after that simply had to make sure we didn't collpase ourselves because Communism was bound to collapse since the system could not work over time.
