Immigration detains Katrina workers

Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS - Agents detained about 100 illegal immigrants working for a Halliburton subcontractor hired to do Hurricane Katrina recovery work, U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu's office said Thursday.

The workers were involved in setting up a tent city at a Navy base outside New Orleans when they were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents Wednesday, Landrieu's office said.

The Birmingham, Ala.-based subcontractor, BE&K, was awarded the work by Houston-based Halliburton. Immigration officials would not confirm or deny that illegal workers were detained at the Belle Chasse Naval Air Station. A call to BE&K headquarters was not answered.

2. Haw haw haw! "A call to BE&K headquarters was not answered."
Birmingham, BE&K's home, is red-state-Bush/Fox-butt-kissing territory where repuke fatcats can do whatever they want, including flouting the law by staffing every job from construction to weedeating with illegals.

New Orleans is... well, New Orleans. Go Landrieu!!

6. Should illegal immigrants be detained?
Should those who hire them (yes, including the very top level of the companies) be arrested?

Or do we just sit here while the Bush administration and its cronies continue to reap obscene profits which derogate EVERY SINGLE VICTORY which labor ever won in this country?

Though you may hate the Minutemen, one thing cannot be denied: they embarrassed the hell out of the Bush cabal. And, as you know, NOBODY could claim they were "just a bunch of liberal moonbats", which is the rightwingnut kool-aid drinkers' usual way of dismissing anyone who dares to speak up against the cancer that is BUSH/CHENEY/HALLIBURTON.

5. I think Halliburton should be barred from receiving government contracts
If the Right is serious about reducing the number of undocumented workers they will impose stiff penalties for hiring them, throughout the supply chain. Otherwise, sit down and STFU. Racist xenophobic rhetoric does no one any good, especially if not backed with corrective action.

7. ... and Halliburton/Cheney's assets should be seized and placed
in the United States Treasury for the use of the American people, whom they have consistently robbed.

And needless to say, the Iraqi people are also due some bigtime restitution from that pot.

8. I wouldn't be surprised if Nagin has put in some calls
to the INS, He made some really intolerant remarks about NO, and how he didn't want to see it go from black to brown.

9. It's a 10K per person fine for improper or missing I-9 forms.
State DOL should get on it ASAP.
