"the criminalization of politics" is new far right buzzword
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 05:57 AM by Nightwing
You'll hear it all over Faux News, Limbaugh, Buchanan, Kristol et al.
May as well get used to it; It's the newest propaganda coming from the far right hypocrites.

Here's a few examples:

Fox News Pushing “Criminalization of Politics” Talking Point

Conservative defenders of Karl Rove and Scooter Libby have settled on their No. 1 talking point: the grand jury investigation into the CIA leak scandal represents the “criminalization of politics.”

In other words, they say, the outing of a covert CIA agent in a time of war to punish a whistleblower is just everyday “politics” — nothing out of the ordinary, certainly nothing criminal. In fact, according to conservatives (as articulated by the National Review), the “criminalizing of politics” is actually “the most dangerous fire of this ordeal.”

To spread this talking point across the nation, the right has received a major assist from Fox News. According to a database search, every single television reference to the CIA leak scandal as the “criminalization of politics” in the last 30 days has been on Fox. Even more stunning: on every occassion, the phrase was introduced into the segment by a Fox News anchor or correspondent, never by a guest.

Below, a compilation of clips featuring Fox anchors Chris Wallace, Sean Hannity, Stuart Varney, Bill O’Reilly, and correspondent William Kristol:

BUCHANAN: I mean, really. I was talking with a friend of mine in the green room last night, and we were talking about this -- you know, the criminalization of politics is appalling. It used to be good enough that you'd go out there, and you beat the guy, fair and square. And he's out for four years, and you have a good laugh. But, now's it's, uh, it's not satisfactory or if you can't beat him, you put him in prison.

The website Think Progress posted Kristol's quote, with the additional comment, "Someone like Bill Kristol doesn’t get information like this by accident. It’s being fed to him so, if there is an indictment, he can prepare the base." They also noted that Kristol appeared to begin his effort in that regard, declaring that, "I hate the criminalization of politics." TP's acerbic comment: "The best way to stop the criminalization of politics is to get the criminals out of politics." - ST

And from Count Novackula

This is the criminalization of politics. Democrats appear to be as frustrated by being out of power in the House the past 10 years as the Republicans were four times that long in the wilderness. But it is a process that never seems to end. Sources in the House GOP leadership say ethics charges are contemplated against House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi for allegedly working with outside groups (which she denies) to get DeLay.

3. whine whine whine
don't these republicans know how to do
anything but whine.... and playing the
victim just highlights what awful crooks
they truly are. How juvenlile.

AND Yeah it's a real shame about the
criminalization of politics and
maybe... just maybe... if the republicans
would stop breaking the law then
something could be done about it.
In the meantime, it's every patriot's
duty to prosecute the crooks out
of our government and put them
behind bars where they belong.

Geez.

5. Pat Buchanan should know better. He's had his share of "good laughs"
with Nixon, Agnew, Hunt, Liddy, Colson, Erlichman, Haldeman and all the rest of those poor, poor victims of the "criminalization of politics."

Pat should be hauled in for a chat with his probation officer.

6. Their new catchphrase implies that corruption is merely...
...a normal aspect of politics. Where that may very well be true, the moment we accept that, we might as well give up on Democracy itself.

Amazing they cannot see that, isn't it? :eyes:

12. I like it!
You can also add that if Republicans didn't commit crimes, then politics wouldn't be politicized. The Republicans themselves have criminalized politics. They didn't need our help.

15. Hmm... maybe turn it around to, "So they admit it. "?
Since it's true that the RepubiCONs have truly criminalized politics by committing crimes (high crimes, treason, etc) while in politics.

It seems to me that we need a few catchy "come back" phrases that can be used against this BS.

Hopefully most Americans will see through this RepubliCONs "spin" BS as the crimes and FACTS come increasingly to light. The biggest challenge is to make darn sure that the FACTS do get out there through: a) folks pushing/shaming the media into covering it and b) spreading the word to every person we can through a "whisper campaign", blogs, websites, tracts, flyers, roadside signs, etc.

16. Doesn't have the same ring as "culture of corruption"
Abuse of power, cronyism, treason, insider trading, money laundering.... this is YOUR republican-controlled government, America! Repubs have had complete power of all three branches of government for five years. The recent political corruption is ALL their doing!

Here's their big error: believing that the end justifies the means. torture is ok if you get some good intelligence. war is ok if you get a friendly democracy. Money laundering is ok if you get your state redistricted. Outing CIA agents is ok if you need to tarnish someone who's on to you.

But the means DO matter. Two wrongs never equal a right. Eventually, everyone is held accountable for all of their actions in life. It's the circle of life. Call it karma or grace or whatever, it's the idea that God is watching all the time, even when no one else is, and every action you take DOES matter.

Every evil committed by this administration will come back to haunt them, and sadly, the United States as well.

19. Pretty simple solution: Stop electing criminals

If the "criminalization of politics" is understood as the installation of criminal elements in political positions, then it is actually the right wing that has criminalized politics. Fitz and Earle aren't "criminalizing politics," they're "law enforcing politicics."

20. Politicizing crime?
How about "Politicalization of Crime." Let's get Olbermann on that.

What's that other laffer they have? "perjury technicality"?

Maybe "murder technicality" is next.

Perhaps I'll run naked through the mall tonight and when I'm arrested I'll complain about the "criminalization of jogging."

You gotta love it.
