Scandal-Plagued Vice President Raises Cash for Santorum
Washington, DC - Vice President Dick Cheney and his top aide may be the
focus of a federal criminal grand jury investigation, but it did not
stop him from raising thousands of dollars in special interest money for
Pennsylvania Republican Senator Rick Santorum. Cheney headlined a $1,000
per plate luncheon today in Shavertown, Penn., to benefit Santorum's
reelection campaign.
Cheney's fundraiser follows the news this week that President Bush's
Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove was forced to cancel three events this
month, including political fundraisers in Connecticut and Virginia,
because of the criminal investigation into his own role in revealing
Valerie Plame's identity.
Democratic National Committee spokesman Damien LaVera today issued the
following statement:
"Senator Santorum is so worried about his reelection campaign that he
brought the scandal-plagued Vice President to a fat cat fundraiser even
as rumors swirl around Cheney's role in a criminal probe. While Karl
Rove was too much of a liability for Republicans in Connecticut and
Virginia, apparently Senator Santorum just can not do without the
special interest dollars Vice President Cheney's $1,000 per plate
lunch brought in.
"Pennsylvanians deserve better. They deserve leaders in Washington who
are committed to ending the culture of corruption fostered by the
Bush-Cheney Administration. Senator Santorum has not only embraced that
culture, he brought it to Pennsylvania to impress his special interest
friends. If Senator Santorum wants to truly represent Pennsylvanians, he
should have cancelled this fundraiser and pledged to join Democrats in
working for cleaner government."
