Poll question: Who would you vote for Paul Hackett or Sherrod Brown?
Ok, if you could vote in Ohio's Democratic Primary who would you vote for? Both are interesting candidates, Brown has a great track record and has been around a while, Hackett is an Iraq War vet, pulls no punches and is a rising star. I like both.

But.. for the record, I'd vote for Sherrod Brown given the chance. Any day. He just fits perfectly with just about everything I believe in. Great voting record, he's a fighter and would be one of the best pure Democratic senators in recent memory. However, Hackett isn't too shabby either. So I can see why anybody would vote for him too. You almost can't go wrong with these guys. I just hope they don't damage each other too much in the primary.

2. I'm not positive, but I might vote Hackett because he might have
a better chance at winning the general election. He appeals to people who are worried the Dems are going to take away thier guns.

win here at DU. DUers believe the only way we can win is if we out "tough guy" the republicans. It doesn't matter much where these folks stand on the issues, just that they are running on their military background. so Hackett will win this poll, just like Clark will win all polls he is listed on.

4. Which one is most likely to win in the Gen. election?
THAT'S who should get the nomination.

6. At this point, either. DeWine's in the shitter.
Which is why I support Brown over Hackett - he's got a long track record of progressivism in Congress. Hackett should find another district from which to run for the House, I'd back him in a heartbeat. Steve LaTourette's district would be good...

7. Or Brown's district
He should go for that since it is now obviously going to be open.

8. I used to think that. However...
Brown's district will go to any dem who runs, I 'spect. Wouldn't it be better to unseat a longtime ass-pimple like LaTourette and create a net gain for blue?

This is all hypothetical armchair strategizing, of coure - Hackett's not going to drop his Senate race despite being unqualified and ranging from vague to wildly inconsistent on his positions.

5. How many people are making an informed vote in this poll?
But as was stated earlier, there are at least two polls already from last week here on DU.

Cause what the rest of us think doesn't count for squat.

12. Brown should NOT have promised he wouldn't run, thereby
leaving the green light to Hackett, only to later get into the race.

Contested primaries are generally NOT good for the survivor. Too much nastiness. Believe me, last year's Dem primary in MO for Gov ruined it for the survivor, McCaskill. She hurt herself among fellow dems, who did NOT like her tactics. I was one of them. Of course, I still voted for her, but some things she said were unconscionable regarding Holden. I cannot believe that this one will end any better.

Also, on principal, Brown showed himself not to be someone you can trust. I don't care what his record is.

Give me Hackett!!!

14. "primaries are generally NOT good for the survivor"
I think this is important to remember. Dems should be civil to eachother in the primaries, there is no reason to make it ugly. The things Dems say about eachother in the primaries is often used by the Republicans in the general election. Didn't Dean's people start the whole Kerry as a flip flopper thing?

progressive track record and legislative experience. In my opinion supporting Sherrod Brown is a matter of putting substance over style.

Here is a good article by David Sirota--link:

15. ALL house seats are up for election every two years
Brown can run again for the seat he holds. Hackett can run again for the seat Schmitt holds and that he almost won. A dem will surely win again in Brown's district whether Sherrod runs or whether it is someone else. Hackett has a good chance to knock off Schmitt. Can you think of any other dem in his district with as good of a chance? What would be best for all of us? I say; Sherrod in the senate, Paul and another unidentified dem in the house. We can pick up two seats that way.

That being said, I would support either man for senator. Keep the primary clean.
