Is this rascist or is it just me ...... ? |
|
Watching cable newz today, they're interviewing people about Rosa Parks.
The people they're interviewing are all black. Why don't they talk to white people, too? Am I seeing this wrong? Can't we assume, in this day and time, that white people also feel richer for this great woman having been among us?
Is it just me? It always strikes me as soft racism when issues related strongly to minority issues are debated or discussed only with people of color? As if they have no other opinions. Or ... as if they're the only ones with opinions on that particular topic?

1. Rosa Parks was my hero |

and I'm white. When I taught school, I made sure that the all the kids knew about her, and how she was striking a blow for freedom for ALL people.

2. I wouldn't read much into it |

African Americans advanced more from her stance than others and I think that having them talk about her is more symbolic.

3. We all advanced from her stance |
|
She ultimately, through her bravery, raised the level of consciousness in this country and for that we're all the richer. White people should be interviewed as well.

I get a bit perturbed when extremely minor things are brought up in the context of racism. We all do a lot of stupid things, probably your example being one of them, but does that make it racist? No, there's no ill-will involved here - it's just a stupid oversight.

6. I agree that there's likely no ill will in doing it ........ |
|
.... but at the same time, it is a knee-jerk action that is all too typical. Sorta in the same category as 'some of my best friends are black'.

8. Ill-will is not a necessary condition for racism |
|
That is the biggest mistake we make when thinking about race. Racism is not tied to ill-will or aggression. It is tied to a whole series of behaviors that seem just as everyday and normal as anything. And racism works not only at the high level of policy, but in our everyday behaviors, actions, and gestures - the "minor" stuff you want to divorce from race analysis.

7. I wouldn't say racist but it does stamp her story as a BLACK story |
|
So it is "theirs" you see not "ours" there is no shared experience here.

10. Rosa Parks was a B lack Woman who initiated a stance that |
|
helped Black folks and other minorities the most. Certainly, as years have passed, many of all races have and are seeing her as a symbol of Justice and courage....but it all started with a movement that was initiated by Black folks. They were the ones that walked to work instead of taking the bus during the boycotts. They were the ones who endured the water hoses and the dogs during the most volatile period of the protests. Sure, there were many White folks at the time who supported the Civil Rights cause....but in terms of proportionality, it was Black folks who initiated and won a meaningfull victory for themselves.
What she did was done at a time when the rule of law, laws that were on the books due to a white ran government, ruled supremely.
White people make up the majority of who we see on TeeVee commentating on some many things......let Black folks who were directly helped by this woman and others like her get a word in edgewise......it can't hurt! :hi:
