NYT: Drumbeat of doubt from Republican senators over Miers grows louder

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 - The drumbeat of doubt from Republican senators over the Supreme Court nomination of Harriet E. Miers grew louder Tuesday as several lawmakers, including a pivotal conservative on the Judiciary Committee, joined those expressing concerns about her selection.

Emerging from a weekly luncheon of Republican senators in which they discussed the nomination, several lawmakers suggested that as Ms. Miers continued her visits on Capitol Hill, she was not winning over Republican lawmakers.

"I am uneasy about where we are," said Senator Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican on the Judiciary Committee who had so far expressed only support for the president's choice. "Some conservative people are concerned. That is pretty obvious." Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, called Republican sentiment toward Ms. Miers's nomination "a question mark."

"There is an awful lot of Republican senators who are saying we are going to wait and see," he said.

1. My prediction: she'll bow out whenever Fitz hands down indictments...
they'll do it for for diversionary purposes.

2. Yes, and it would be in keeping with their usual modus operandi...
Let's see what this week holds for the boy king:

1). 2000th U.S. casualty in Iraq

2). Buh-BYE, Harriet

3). Frist KNEW! Blind trust? Nope...

4.) Indictments and the coming of Fitzmas

5). "The Hammer" still twisting on the hook

Oooh...BAD week.

4. general talkinghead blather
lots of speculation leaning towards Miers withdrawing her nomination for "personal reasons"

others are saying she won't survive the hearings because of lack of knowledge/experience with constitutional law

my partner thinks bush* will be the one to withdraw the nomination as opposed to Miers withdrawing -- but I disagree

the spin won't hold together if bush* initiates the withdrawal -- gotta remember he's painted as being full of resolve and determination, stay the course blah blah blah. If he backtracks on this by withdrawing the nomination - that sort of means he's made a mistake and/or caving in to outside pressures

enny-whoo - whether or not some behind the scenes pressuring is going on - the "official" spin will be that Miers is withdrawing her nomination

5. Can't imagine any scenario in which Bush withdraws the nomination
If he goes to Miers and says "I want you to withdraw" it will become an "I have decided to withdraw my nomination in order to devote more time to (fill in the blank)"

Even when Bush "accepted responsibility" for FEMA failures during Katrina, he NEVER said "I should have spent less time fake-strumming my guitar and sucking cake off my fingers and more time being president."

If Bush withdraws the nomination, he's admitting failure. Ain't gonna happen.

6. More Republican hypocricy...
..they are always telling us to "trust the president", but they don't even trust him.

Who could, the man can't ride a bicycle without fucking up.
