GOP experts worried about '06 voting
GOP experts worried about '06 voting

October 26, 2005

WASHINGTON – Americans have turned so sour about the state of the country and their lives that Republican strategists fear they could rise in a wave of anger and sweep Republicans out of power in Congress in next year's elections, much as they swept the Democrats out in 1994.

Voters haven't yet turned to the Democrats as a viable alternative.

But their anxiety about Iraq, the economy, gasoline prices and the overall performance of their federal government has left even some Republican strategists fearing the November 2006 elections.

(snip)

Beyond that, Bush and Republican lawmakers are hindered in their ability to wage a political comeback. They're torn by internal fights over Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court and soaring federal spending.

They also face a litany of woes beyond their control. Among them: a criminal investigation into White House leaks of a CIA officer's name; a U.S. death toll in Iraq that passed the 2,000 mark yesterday; and a coming surge in winter home-heating costs.

(snip)

1. Unfortunately, we have to wait a year to vote
So much time for stupidity to re-emerge. So many people who will eat up whatever this White House puts out like doggie biscuits.

This time - it might be different.
There is absolutely NOTHING on the horizon that's going to help George Bush this time. Oil prices are expected to keep spiraling up. For sure, they won't go down. So that's a big thorn in his side.

The war in Iraq will continue. Bush has said many times, we're going to "stay the course". So that will just get worse - no doubt about it.

Home heating oil is expected to skyrocket. I have grimly predicted many frozen bodies being hauled out because they could not afford to stay warm this winter. Believe me, that will piss off MILLIONS who are watching the spectacle on the nightly news.

The Plame incident will only make Bush seem like a bigger ass than he already is.

Prediction: (no crystal ball needed) THE GOP IS TOAST.

5. If there were major terrorist attack...
do you think it would rally the small minds around the consistency-is-strength strategy -- no time to change leadership, support our (p)resident, etc? I think this time it would not be an effective distraction for the GOPukes, as they've put all their eggs in the we-keep-you-safe basket. It'd backfire. Success in Iraq? Capturing Osama? Either way, not a GOP panacea. I sure hope they're toast, nice and black. Somebody tell the GOP that the only way for them to stay in power is for them to honor the Constitution, to support labor and small businesses, to allow real improvements in schools, to attack corruption, to get out of Iraq, to regulate communications so as to encourage an open marketplace of ideas, to retroactively end the tax breaks for those who don't need them and give working Americans a fighting chance, to protect the rights of human beings over mega-corporate entities....
nah. They've still got Diebold, ES&S, Triad....
Here endeth the rant.

3. This gives us time to sharpen our message
Just being angry at the GOP is not enough, will not be enough. After all things were bad this time last year too.

We need to be able to neutralize the so-called social issues (abortion and gay marriage) and concentrate on what really is important to the voters in their day to day life: jobs, environment, health care, quality of school - rewarded with good jobs, and dignified retirement.

4. "Voters haven't yet turned to the Democrats as a viable alternative" this
is trash.

voters haven't yet had their votes counted... and plenty turned against pukes.

no matter how much * fucked up, they stole it plenty easily in 2004.
this is all lies
