Something very, very odd.............
Here is Dimson, facing the bleakest days of his embattled Presidency...indctments about to fall any moment...and where's Poppy and Babs?

Why, they're having a great time at the World Series watching their beloved Asros getting sweeped!

Why is that? Wouldn't Poppy be the wise counselor to his son? The turn-to guy to fix the problems? That's been a life long pattern for Dimson.

Is he keeping Poppy out of the WH...or has Poppy given up on his son and letting him "sink or swim" on his own? Except for an occaisional vacation shot, Poppy's been "out of the loop", visibility-wise, in his son's entire administration.

Or is he the 'Wizard of Oz' pulling the levers and twisting the valve behind the curtain?

Seems very odd to me.........

1. Why would it seem odd? These are the same people who swaggered
off to the golf course for the day immediately after their little girl died. And, if I remember correctly, they had no funeral for her, either.

Nice people, 'eh?

Then again, with THIS kid, I'm not surprised they'd want to keep their distance. I can't imagine my son shaming me to the gross extent that junior has shamed ghwb and the dowager empress.

2. Maybe the father is unhappy with W's well publicised comment,
when asked if he talked to his dad in the run up to war, that he turned to a higher father.

4. No. If you've ever read up on the psychological dynamics of the...
Bush dad and son relationship, I think it becomes apparent that Dad is there when GW succeeds, but Dad is absent when GW falters.

And Babs was always a distant mother, rewarding the kids when they were good, passive-aggressively avoiding the kids when they were bad--and this pattern extended into their adulthood.

but you're right about that. How vile.

6. Scowcroft said that Dimson won't let his father talk to him about anything
He reported that Poppy tries to make "appointments" with junior but no go.

7. I think they're keeping up appearances by attending the games.
They've made it a point to be seen by arranging to be seated behind the batter's box -- an area that is very high-profile to the cameras. The message is there's no reason for them to be worried.

10. I think you may be correct.......
But, every game? I guess any overt show of Poppy at the WH would be interpreted as a sign of weakness. I do wonder how much they are communicating or if Dimson has estranged himself from Dad. I can imagine that Poppy had plainly warned his neer-do-well son that invading and toppling Saddam was a risky mistake, but he didn't listen. Not much he can do now to fix his son's problems this time. Might as well enjoy watching Roger bring in the high heat....

20. They'll keep up appearances for the public...
but I agree with you that there's probably tension between Poppy/Dimson.

24. Don't know if it means anything, but Poppy wasn't there for Game 3
Neil accompanied his mother.
The Bushes were certainly prominent in the TV coverage. Hard to miss Barbara's white hair behind the batter.

12. What I also find extremely odd about the parent-son relationship
is how periodically when little Georgie is getting criticized (rightly) for f'ing this or that up, it's become really predictable that Mommy and Daddy (in particular) will be interviewed and give their views about how the criticism is unfair and how it's hurtful, and how they can't help but speak out against the critcisms and the critics on behalf of their son. Daddy Bush uses a plaintive, almost whining tone for these types of interviews.

What the whole thing really reminds me of is those types of parents who obviously know that their "wonderful" perfect child is actually a nasty lil' b'strd, but who will never admit that their child could EVER have done what he's been accused of, because they just know, in their hearts, that way deep down that their darlin' little sociopath really is a very good boy who means well and tries his best.

BUT, the real reason they think this way is because it's a shame on them. It really doesn't have anything to do with the kid, but has EVERYTHING to do with how people perceive them as parents.

So, every time I see those two on TV whining about critcism levelled at their little Georgie, who is an adult and the president of the United States, I just can't help but realize that I'm witnessing the actions of a pathologically sick family.

I wonder if little Georgie squirms or cringes in shame when his parents "defend" him like this?

13. I always have the sneaking suspicion
that Poppy secretly enjoys it when Junior fucks up. It's all about one-upmanship with these guys, and I'm betting it still rankles with Poppy that his idiot son got a second term but he (Poppy Bush) didn't. The more of a mess Junior makes, the more Poppy can feel superior.

Of course, this will never stop him "defending" the idiot, because he's got to go through the motions and so does Babs, because to do otherwise reflects badly on them, as you pointed out.

14. Remember, Poppy headed the CIA
Poppy not so happy that the VP business interest prevailed over his own. Poppy REALLY not so happy to see the VP smack the CIA around.
also...Poppy followed the word of Scowcroft (NSA) during the first Gulf war, NOT Cheney, his then Secretary of Defense.
Poppy is aware that his shrub is a dip shittely-doo, he's also aware that his VP is not.

But then again, Colin's been more of a father to little Junior than has Poppy.
