Simple Sambo wants to move to the big house
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 01:52 PM by Nederland
I'm surprised I haven't seen anything here about Steve Gilliard's gaff involving a recent post. I searched here and found nothing, so I'll post it myself. Regardless of what you think, it seems that it has resulted in a bit of self destruction--the Tim Kaine campaign has already removed their ads from the site.

The article begins with this:

I's Simple Sambo and I's running
for the Big House

The whole thing is here:

1. I dont like this at all.

I live in Maryland and stunts like this are what put Ehrlich/Steele in the Governors mansion. Remember the Oreo cookie incident? White on the inside, black on the outside?

Ehrlich/Steele 2002 - 18% of the African American vote. Wanna' see that number rise? Keep stuff like this up.

Not cool if you ask me.

2. This reminds me of that Ted Danson fiasco.
It's just not funny.

Steele is a terrible politician, but this is a terrible way to attack his politics.

3. Indeed. We can beat him on the issues.
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 02:02 PM by nickshepDEM
Steele supports the war.
Steele supports the president.
Steele is anti-choice.
Steele has already been bought and paid for by the backers of Tom Delay, Bill Frist, and George W. Bush.

No need to go this low to beat him.

4. Exactly what I thought too
I remember the whole Ted Danson thing--this is way too familiar and Gilliard should have known better.

6. I live in downtown Baltimore. I've met exactly 2 Republicans...
... here in the last 3 years.

Believe me, those 2 Repukes would be all over this like stink on a skunk if they knew what a blog was.

Psst. Don't forget to read the DU Blog Box column tomorrow (on the homepage)!

22. We're happy to have you.
I live in Reservoir Hill, a few miles north of you. I hope you are having a good time here and are not falling prey to the negative hype. Don't watch the local news, and do register and vote if you haven't already.

Steele and most republicans, are sellouts to humanity. The imagery is unsettling, but does depict the views of lots of black people. Steele represents very few of us indeed. That said, he is so wrong on so much, that he can be soundly beaten on the issues.

8. This shit has NO place in MY politics
And anyone who espouses this is no friend or ally of mine.

This is just plain disgusting.

Would he do the same thing if Kwaese Mfume gets the nod to run against Steele?

Its Two Thousand and Fucking Five, fer Krissakes. When are people gunna start measuring others on their merit?

Whoever this blogger is, he has lost any respect I might have found for him. Pissant motherfucker.

9. I wonder if there are some young people who don't get the reference.
I had a totally around the bend algebra teacher in 9th grade who actually sang "Little Black Sambo" in class. This was in southern Missouri in the mid sixties, and she was so CLUELESS. She was just weird all the way around, and I sometimes wonder if that was her last year to teach. If that is what one could call "teaching".

13. Certainly a fact that many of the RW trolls and blogs will ignore.
One could still argue that it's crass and unproductive, but to argue that the context doesn't change at all since the original author is African American would be obtuse.

And look at all the gawking wingnut trolls there, they're having a field day projecting the racism of the RW onto the entire left because of this one post. So typical.

Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 06:17 PM by FredScuttle
Uncle Toms like Steele need to be called out for what they are - shucking, jiving minstrel show performers for their GOP massas. It's hiliarious when oblivious idiots like Andrew Sullivan and Fat Ass Goldberg call Steve a racist without bothering to find out that he's black....curious when DU'ers do the same thing.

on edit: forgot to mention....if any of you bothered to read Steve's post, you'll find out the source of his ire at Steele...when it came out that Gov. Erlich spoke at a fundraiser held at a country club that excludes blacks, Steele said it was "no big deal". He's a fucking race traitor and if this is the worst he has to experience, it's not even close enough to what this craven Uncle Tom deserves.

23. The truth is vile. The imagery is.
I now understand the author is black. That, to me, doesn't change a thing. The message could have been gotten out there in many other ways.

Imagine, if you will, some Republican strategist getting hold of this and running an 'outrage' story on teevee, complete with the imagery. The author's ethnicity will come out later, but the imagery will stick. And **our** side will appear racist.

The image is what it is ...... vile racial sterotyping.

Is it representative of a true event? Yes. Absolutlely. Steele was, in deed and in fact, an Uncle Tom in that country club incident.

But this doesn't counter it. All it does is inflame. In my view, it hurts far, far more than it helps.

24. Newsflash: Republicans will do that anyway
I reject, compeletly, this oft-raised idea that we have to live according to the fear of what Republicans will twist our words and ideas into. After the Swift Boat bullshit, I would think that we're all clear that we're dealing with people who have no problem inventing smears about us.

It's a provocative image on a progressive blog....not a press release from the DNC.

16. Let me ask a general question
What is the problem that the DU community has with a liberal black person depicting a black Republican (who is on record as defending his white boss' appearance at fundraiser held at a white-only club in Maryland) as a sellout to his race?

The objections offered center on the use of racist imagery in the effort to do that. The charge would seem to be valid; it seems the means employed to press it some find objectionable.

and the means, though unsettling to these few, are equally valid.

Political satire, I think, is often misconstrued, as in this case...I hope it survives

20. I appreciate Steve's blunt imagery
and his clarity in these matters, especially when he calls out black Republicans who are ensnared in the Sophie's Choice of fealty to their race or their GOP benefactors.'

To me, a Black man in this day who defends his governor's appearance at a segregated country club is no better than a Stepin Fetchit or Moon Tan in enabling racism in our society. As a minority, I'm outraged...as should any reasonable person.
