Rove's Last Campaign

By Dan Froomkin
Special to washingtonpost.com
Wednesday, October 26, 2005

Will Karl Rove, architect of President Bush's improbable political career, snatch one last victory from the jaws of defeat? (Or at least avoid getting indicted?) Something appears to have provoked special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald into a last-minute flurry of activity centered around Rove.

Tom Hamburger, Richard B. Schmitt and Peter Wallsten write in the Los Angeles Times: "Prosecutors investigating the leak of a CIA agent's identity returned their attention to powerful White House advisor Karl Rove on Tuesday, questioning a former West Wing colleague about contacts Rove had with reporters in the days leading to the outing of a covert CIA officer. . . .

"Fitzgerald's investigators asked the former colleague about any comments Rove may have made about his conversations with journalists in the days before Plame's name was made public by syndicated columnist Robert Novak."

Whether this is good or bad news for Rove is unclear. But here's what you need to keep in mind: There is every reason to think that Rove is throwing every move he's got at Fitzgerald in an attempt to escape criminal charges.

I sure do want Rove indicted, but we need an airtight case, and I think that is what Fitz is going for.

4. Of course! I wouldn't expect any less from Rove's attys.
HOWEVER...if Fitz has the proof, Rove's only option is to roll over on someone, or fight at trial.

"give up" a bigger fish. And there are only 2 bigger fishes, Bush and Chaney. So if there is a "flurry of activity centered around Rove" that can be no comfort to the folks at the White House.

9. Remember Who Fired the Special Prosecutor Against Nixon?
During the Saturday Night Massacure, remember who finally agreed to fire the special prosecutor who was close to nailing Nixon, after the first two officials refused Nixon's orders and resigned? It was our good friend Robert Bork.

Maybe George the Second will appoint Bork to the Supreme Court, in an ultimate FU action.

(Robert Bork, along with Anton Scalia, were the two judges who also overturned the long-standing Fairness Doctrine in broadcast TV and radio coverage of political issues. As a result, we have Fox News.)

11. Bork nomination would be DOA.
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 02:28 PM by longship
We've been down that road before. His part in the SNM would be prominent in the hearings. Plus, he has a huge published record, much of which places him firmly within the lunatic fringe.

His nomination wouldn't get out of committee, if it even has a chance at all to get onto the committee schedule.

10. Will politics help Rover here?
If I'm Fitz, I'm going to stiffen against any political moves by Rove. I'd also caution him sternly about acts that might be construed as interference with the investigation.

I am very curious. What possibly can he do that wouldn't cross the line?

12. Fitz should stop accepting phone calls from his lawyers.
He should not, for one moment, trust the information that Karl will provide. It may later turn out to be erroneous.

Although Karl Rove sounds desperate here. And after seeing video of Karl's behavior over his years with the president, the man seems sociopathically crazy.

We need to jail him just to keep us safe.

14. My main concern is
Evil people such as we see in the Bush regime have a historical tendency to not go quietly without, if all else fails, attempting to give the judge, prosecutor and/or witnesses an offer they can't refuse. If you know what I mean.

18. Whatever it is that Rove & his lawyers are doing, we can COUNT ON IT
that they're up to no good, and that they have a well thought-out strategy in doing whatever it is they're doing.

They'll gladly plant some false information that will get everything thrown out, in the long run.

Fitz needs to be VERRrrryy CAREFUL how he handles this slimy snake. You can count on it that the best minds money can buy, in all of the right-wing think tanks, have crafted some type of last-minute maneuver that could throw a wrench in the legal gears.

:kick:

20. What dirty tactics did Rove use?
I strongly suspect that one of them happened at the time of his last GJ testimony. He threw out something that he and his attorney were pleased with, and threw Fitz into a bit of a twirl. Just based on the pics that day, and somethings that others on the board have said.
I think that Fitz is now fighting back to step up the pressure.

No chance of him getting off the hook.....

If he does, which I doubt, it'll tear open his face and leave scars. I don't mind either :)

That is, can the Bushies offer him enough to make it worth his while to cool his heals for a year or two, maybe less, in a minimum security prison somewhere?
