Halfway serious question, but do you think that some of twisted thinking that comes out of the religious right (and sometimes the "not-so-far right" right) is a result of poor potty training or some other childhood trauma or unhappiness? I guess I go with the blank slate theory and therefore wonder sometimes how people like Rove or O'Reilly or Coulter end up the way they are.

1. Sigmund Freud talked about poor potty training |

I was a psych major in college many years ago, but I believe Freud talked about poor potty training and how it creates uptight people, the kind of people who vote Republican.

Thank you. I really do think that it's more nurture than nature. And what you learn as a child growing up really molds who you are and how you think about the world.

about Nazism in Germany. They were some weird, patriarchal, feces-obsessed mo-fos, apparently.

it's a total lack of empathy...empathy for other human beings that maybe (oh my Gosh!) different from them...

But where does it come from? How do we learn to NOT have empathy? It seems like empathy would be a normal/natural feeling to have. But I know that I teach it to my kids whenever I have the opportunity. I show them how to put themselves into someone else's shoes. Think about what it would be like not to have a home, a place to take a warm bath, toys, food to eat. They get it. But I teach it to them.
If I didn't give a damn, they probably wouldn't either.
