My partner's mom lives near Fort Lauderdale. She'll be 86 next month. She's in good health and pretty active.
She didn't evacuate to a shelter when Wilma hit - "..I didn't want to end up like those people in the Superdome and have to poop in the halls..." was the reason she gave for not evacuating.
She has water - the complex she lives in has a generator to pump water - but not much else and they are expressing concerns about having enough fuel to continue to provide water. power is still out, getting gas for car is a huge problem, and most of the stores are either closed or just about stripped bare. Her only link to what's going on is a radio and batteries are running low. We're going to overnight her some batteries - she did say there was no mail delivery because post office trucks can't get gas. We're going to try to send it UPS or FED-EX and keep our fingers crossed.
On wednesday morning, a neighbor stopped by with a hot breakfast for her. Yesterday someone came by and gave her a bag of ice - she quipped "oh that must mean bush* is in town?"
