Ever since we've read reports about Bush's plummeting popularity my reaction was: so what? We are stuck with him for the duration. No, he will not be impeached, not with a Republican majority in Congress, at least.
So when I read this in today's WSJ, about choosing a new candidate for the Supreme Court, I have to wonder:
"Presidential allies expect him to try calming a rebellious Republican right by picking an unequivocal judicial conservative. But Democrats are likely to battle any choice designed to appease the president's right flank -- renewing Senate warfare over judicial nominations from earlier this year that had appeared to subside.
He could reach for a consensus choice in hopes of pleasing centrist Republican and Democrat senators, thus avoiding a confirmation fight. But that might open him to conservative attacks that he has abdicated his responsibilities on a crucial matter, deepening the perception of presidential weakness."
Should he care about pleasing the rabid dogs on the extreme right, or would he like his legacy - assuming he understands that word - to be of a president who could climb above partisanship?
I wonder whether we - Democrats and if anyone of us know of moderate independents and republicans - should start our own letter writing campaign appealing to his legacy.

1. Is he interested in his legacy? |
|
In answer to a question about how history would view his actions, Bush replied, "What does it matter? We'll all be dead".

2. Ok, but what if he is implicated in the coverup of the Plame affair? |
|
I'll betcha he will be before it is over. He and Cheney and Condi Rice and Rumsfeld will all be dished out, a la carte. Compliments of Rove.

4. The other day on CNN someone talked about Nixon |
|
that on one ever suggested that he personally ordered the burglary, but he was going to be impeached on cover up.
I don't even know whether Bush is smart enough to plan any cover up. Clearly the powers behind the curtain just wanted a face to say what he was told to say.
And I think that for a while Bush really thought that he was the decision maker, the commanding commander in chief. But I suspect that is now getting restless. That's not the easy life, fun and game that he was promised, while the country enjoys peace and prosperity, as it did during the Clinton year.
I wonder whether right now he really really would rather be back home in Texas, having fun and be bothered with matters that are above his level of competency. But before he collects his marbles and goes home, we need him to get an acceptable justice for life.

5. He doesn't need to care. Like you said, he was already elected |
|
And I doubt they are too worried about the 06 elections.
