Former lawmaker, consultant, subpoenaed in campaign probe

October 28, 2005

LEWISTON, Maine --Maine's campaign-oversight agency has subpoenaed former state Rep. Stavros Mendros and political consultant Daniel Rogers to testify about possible misuse of public money in two state legislative races last year.

The Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices has been investigating a pair of publicly funded House and Senate campaigns from last year. The Senate District 14 campaign of Julie St. James of the unofficial Fourth Branch Party has been unable to account for $36,500 in money from the Clean Election fund that was used in that campaign. St. James is from Hartford.

The commission is also trying to determine how much of the $4,488 received by the campaign of Green Party candidate Sarah Trundy of Minot in her 2004 House District 96 seat went to campaign-related expenses.

Mendros, a Lewiston city councilor, has been subpoenaed to testify about his role in an effort by St. James' campaign to get a Republican voter list from him. Mendros says he never supplied the campaign with a voter list.
