When religion is a litmus test - Why Miers was Shot Down by Fundies
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 03:51 AM by RamboLiberal
Roddy has dug up some interesting info here - frightening how the Fundies are taking control of our government and the SCOTUS. This clown suggests that if Miers was attending St. John's cause Bush went there and not her denomination, that it was a red flag to them that her loyalty to Bush was greater than to her Lord!

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05303/597121.stm

<snip>

The Rev. Rob Schenck, head of the National Clergy Council, a small Christian right group with surprising access to power players in Washington, swung a brief meeting with Ms. Miers. He described it as "pastoral" in nature. Rev. Schenck asked her about her faith, her prayer habits, her beliefs in whether God directly intervenes in this world.

"We just talked generally about prayer," he said. "She said that it was extremely important to her. She asked for our prayers, which I assured her she would have -- and she's had all along. We talked about the importance of her knowing the will of God for her life, for the court, for the nation. She said that was of utmost importance to her."

<snip>

Thus assured of Ms. Miers' religious orthodoxy, Rev. Schenck did a little more digging. He discovered, after their meeting, Ms. Miers belongs to The Church of Christ back in Texas but, while in Washington, attends St. John's Episcopal Church, across the street from the White House and across the theological divide from the Christian Right.

Rev. Schenck discovered that the church hosted the Rev. Peter Gomes, pastor of The Memorial Church of Harvard University and an openly gay clergyman. Digging deeper, he found St. John's had also received an Episcopal monk from New Jersey whose monastery, Rev. Schenck said, hosts an annual retreat for gay couples titled "Gay and Committed and Christian."

"It was a liberal church in every way," Rev. Schenck said. "The more I probed, the more I discovered the same. We were assured Ms. Miers would not change once in office, but it looked like she had already changed. She is attending a theologically and morally liberal church."

2. This story is so full of crap
Why would it be okay for Bush to go there and not Miers? The only reason why Bush goes there is 1. for show, 2. for security reasons & convenience- it's right across the street from the WH.

Besides, do they even have a Church of Christ in DC?

I don't think it's BS! And I resent you calling it that.

I challenge you to email or call Roddy with your crap comment droddy@post-gazette.com 412-263-1965 - he loves to take on doubters.

Roddy even will call a radio show to debunk the Wingnuts. I listened to him one night take apart one of the Swiftboaters and had the guy sputtering.

4. It's not the writer that I have a problem with
it's this Rev. Rob Schenck, head a small Christian right group, who seems to be quite full of himself and his importance in this story. Why doesn't it bother him that Bush has been going to this church since he moved into the WH, but it's not okay for Bush's staff to go with him to the same church? Typical fundie I suppose, they never are logical or consistant.

8. Bush virtually doesn't go to any church
except when he has to put on a show for political reasons and is stuck staying at the WH for the weekend. This doesn't seem to bother the fundies either.

10. Why She Was Pulled: Not to Have DOBSON & BAUER Under Oath
The fundies, who got private assurances MIERS would do their dirty work, were going to be called as witnesses under oath. They could NOT let this happen.
