How Do We Get Candidates For 2006 With Balls Of Steel?
That includes, obviously, both men and women.

We need a hundred more Paul Hacketts. People who will talk directly and bluntly. People who will tell the truth.

People who will hammer home three or four simple themes, over and over again, relentlessly staying on message.

And, most importantly, people who will play hardball, in your face wedge politics with the Republicans.

We do not need more of what we have: airy, disjointed, polite, weak dissenters who cannot stay on message.

Who do we have who can organize this? I have great faith in Howard, but I don't see the message coming down from on high yet and we're at the 12 month mark now.

2. 2006 is created when in 2005 candidates think the water's WARM!!
a good congressional candidate is here www.randygordonforcongress.com
and he also understands election reform needs regarding suppression of the vote and the nontransparency of the corporate vote counting very well.

11. Thank you
I don't think it's obvious that "balls of steel" applies to women.

We need to ocme up with a different way of defining strong people. It doesn't come down to anatomical proportions.

4. Careful that again and again, SEEMS we're attacking from Right wing
Hackett, good candidate but can we have just as good without military service, or not?

DEMS: in 9-11 hearings, attacked admin from the right, not focused enough on terrorism, Iraq instead....

Repub: Harriet miers, rightwing echo chamber gets message out that problem is, Myers is not conservative enough and someone more ideologically committed is what's needed for america.

DEMS: * the most fiscally irresponsible Pres ever (true, but another attack from the right)

DEMS/progressives: WTO changes and globalization are changing things too fast (attack is conservative or status-quo based)

there are many more examples but I hope you can see my point that candidates will have balls of steel when the KNOW that they will get "air support" and "Ground support" if they articulate progressive values, as opposed to conservative values harnessed against Repubs.

10. I don't see that fiscal responsibility and a strong national defense
are "conservative" or "rightwing" issues. I think they are very much progressive issues.

You can't grow an economy that is going to give us a tax base that affords us the ability to lift up the folks struggling at the bottom without balancing the budget and trimming pork and re examining entitlement programs.

You can't keep our country free for its citizens to peacably travel and work and raise their families without a sensible, strong, walk softly and carry a big stick policy of national defense.

The problem predates your assumptions. The Republicans have STOLEN these issues from us and our taking them back is not attacking them from the right, it is showing that we have progressive ideas on both issues that will work far better to create a stronger, safer American than the failed ideas that they have been propogating.

7. California has its own 'Paul Hackett' - Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown is taking on Doolittle in California's 4th. Remember, Doolittle is the jerk that handed out "hammer" pins to fellow congressmen to show support to Tom DeLay. Doolittle needs be sent to the woodshed, and I'm thinking Charlie has the balls and brains to do it.

Democratic Candidate Charles Brown Pledges a Tough Fight to "Take Back Our Country"

By: Brown for Congress
Published: October 22, 2005 at 11:29

Standing before an enthusiastic crowd of supporters on the steps of the Veterans Memorial Hall in Roseville on Saturday, Lt. Col. Charles Brown, retired USAF, officially announced his candidacy for Congress. Brown will challenge Republican John T. Doolittle for California’s 4th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

After thanking the supporters present who had traveled from various areas throughout the large district, Brown emphasized his commitment to what he anticipates to be "a tough race." Alongside his wife Jan, Brown said this "is the start of a long battle to take back our country. This is not a country for just the big corporations and the wealthiest top one percent."

Brown outlined key issues in his campaign: security, integrity, prosperity and conservation, and then urged everyone to become involved in defeating the first six propositions on the ballot in the upcoming California Special Election, "so we still have democracy here in California."

The ultimate goal of his candidacy, Brown explained, is to restore our government to its origins of being for "we the people" as prescribed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Expressing a strong belief in the need for transparency and integrity in government service, Brown promised that if elected, his Congressional website will list his contacts with lobbyists and others who meet with him to discuss legislation.

9. That's good to hear - also check out Francine Busby
she's running for Duke Cunningham's seat in OC and she is terrific. Dedicated, relentless and on message.

12. That's good, too.
I understand Duke Cunningham is politically dead and the race is wide open. Any word on what republicans might be stepping up to run?

Now, back to Charles Brown: My district (8th) is secure and I live close to the 4th (in fact, I used to live in the 4th) and I had the pleasure of meeting Brown a month ago. Brown's presence, wit, and smarts is easly recognizable - I was very impressed. So, that's the fight I need to get involved in. Interesting, this race might just epitomize the whole midterm election; GOP congresspeople with purse strings tied to DeLay scurrying for darkness (cockroaches?) as the Delay trial moves forward. It's going to be fun to watch!

8. I don't usually do this, but: Gen Clark is swinging a set right now.
You don't need to look too far to find one Dem who is out front right now, and will still be standing up when 06 is past. I was MOST impressed with Clark and how he sounded (I read the transcript of it...) on Armed Forces Radio just recently.

He was quite direct about the fact that he thinks Iraq is headed into civil war unless there is intervention, and he actually dared to use the word "conspiracy" in reference to the lies that took us into Iraq to begin with.

I know a lot of the DUers are lukewarm on Clark, and I know it is not primary season yet--but I sure wish more Dems would model Gen Clark's courage in speaking out about the quagmire in Iraq and the insult to freedom that is in our current White House...
