just picked up a bible for the first time...
in about ten years, i was thinking of picking out something that * and co. do that isn't "christian". I was brought up jewish (sort of) and the phrase "that isn't kosher" was often used... even though we weren't kosher. Anyway, I open "the book" and the first page and first sentence i see is:

A wise man will hear and increase learning,
and a man of understanding will attain wise council.

Proverbs 1:5

this passage about shunning evil counsel is compelling...
anyone have another good verse or section i could peruse?

1. Here's one, Matthew 7:16
In my religious tradition, I have been taught that "ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control." (Galatians 5:22)

6. Luke 21:8 - Be Ye Not Deceived
And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

2. Get to the New Testament
All the bits about selling everything you own, bearing each other's burdens, rendering unto Caesar and to God as two different things, not being able to serve both God and mammon, forgiving infinitely, and the entire Sermon on the Mount--essentially all the ethical parts of Christianity are missing from Bushism.

be a lot easier to just look for something they have done that is Christian. It would be a lot shorter list.

9. Well, the book of Acts contains passages that indicate a strong
socialist streak. It could be argued that the entire principle of "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" comes from biblical roots.

All that believed were together, and had all things in common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
(Acts 2:44-45)

There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”). He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
(Acts 4:34-37) (this is actually followed by a story of a couple who sold some property, but did not give all the proceeds to the community, instead keeping some for themselves. . . when confronted by Peter, they fell down dead)

This is echoed in Exodus as well:

This is what the Lord has commanded: Gather of it, every man of you, as much as he can eat; you shall take an omer apiece, according to the number of persons who each of you has in his tent. And the people of Israel did so; they gathered some more, some less. But when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; each gathered according to what he could eat
(Ex. 16:16-18)

10. "If he is without sin cast the first stone,"
I am not sure what passage that's from. Gammy told me it was more important to love thy neighbor than anything else.

11. In Matthew 11:19, Jesus said:
"Wisdom is proved right by her actions."

The context is interesting if you want to read further. The Beatitudes, Matthew 5:1-12 contain the essence of Jesus' teachings to his followers.

Blessings!

12. The Beatitudes (Sermon on the Mount). My favorite.
Don't know how the right-wing Christians get around this core message of Christ, but they indeed do it. This is found in Matthew:

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

14. Proverbs 6:16
"There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers."

16. I always wondered why
they refused to include the Greek apocrypha when they quote their bibles.

Esdras dream always struck me as quite apt at describing Bushco and our present situation.

2 Esdras chapters 11 and 12- dream of the Eagle

snippet

11:30 And then I saw that the two other heads were joined with it.
11:31 And, I observed the head was turned with them that were with it, and did eat up
the two feathers under the wing that would have reigned
.
11:32 But this head put the whole earth in fear, and ruled over all those that were
dwelling upon the earth with much oppression; and it had the government of the world
more than all the wings that had been.
11:33 And after this, I observed the head that was in the middle suddenly appeared no
more, like the wings.
11:34 But there remained the two heads, which also in like manner ruled upon the earth
and over those that dwelt therein.
11:35 And I watched, and the head upon the right side devoured the one that was upon
the left side
.
11:36 Then I heard a voice, which said unto me, Look before you, and consider what
you have seen.
11:37 And I watched, as it were, a roaring lion chased out of the wood: and I saw that he
sent out a man's voice unto the eagle, and said,
11:38 Hear you, I will talk with you, and the Highest shall say unto you,
11:39 Are you not the one that has remained of the four beasts, of whom I made to
reign in my world, that the end of their times might come through them?

It's pretty clear why they don't like it
