A simple way Officialdom manages the Press |
|
Back in the Reagan years I remember reading about how difficult it was for hard-hitting reporters to gain access to the President. One way to exclude reporters that they dont' like is to simply not invite them to White House social functions. That the Press has no business being at social gatherings of their adversaries in the first place was never questioned.
It's quite simple: you get access if the President likes you. If you get access, you get the story and get it much easier than those who have to overcome obstacles and dig up the story from other sources. Access is nearly everything. This single dynamic is horrific in its implications for a free Press. IMO it largely explains how and why the media turned into infotainment after Watergate. By this set-up the reporter has to be liked by their adversary, totally destroying the reporters function.

the White House is OUR property, and its functions managed under the auspices of authority grunted by US, therefore to block the fourth estate, also ostensibly working under our authority, from attending said functions is a direct slap in the face of the people.
