I saw Bruce Cockburn last night in Kansas City...
Often called the Canadian Bob Dylan, I think Dylan couldn't tune this gentleman's guitar.

His first album came out in 1972 and he's one of the most accomplished singer songwriters alive today.
And he is an amazingly accomplished guitarist.
He sang two songs that have yet to be recorded.

"Tell the Universe" is about you know who.

"Tell the universe what you've done
Out in the desert with your smoking gun
Looks like you've been having too much fun
Tell the universe what you've done

Tell the universe what you took
While the heavens tremble and the mountains shook
All those lives not worth a second look
Tell the universe what you took

You've been projecting your shit at the world
Self-hatred tirade up, it's payback time
You can self-destruct, that's your right
But keep it to yourself if you don't mind

You've been projecting your shit at the world
Self-hatred tirade up, it's payback time
You can self-destruct, that's your right
But keep it to yourself if you don't mind

Tell the universe where you've been
With your blood stained shoes and your dunces grin
Gotta notify next of kin
Tell the universe where you've been"...

Next up...

"MIghty Trucks of Midnight"

"Used to have a town but the factory moved away
Down to Mexico where they work for hardly any pay
Used to have a country but they sold it down the river
Like a repossessed farm auctioned off to the highest bidder

Mighty trucks of midnight
Moving on
Moving on

Wave a flag, wave the bible, wave your sex or your business degree
Whatever you want -- but don't wave that thing at me
The tide of love can leave your prizes scattered
But when you get to the bottom it's the only thing that matters"..

This man was completely mesmerizing.
Just him, and four acoustic guitars and about 125 people.
Played for a little over 2 hours.
For Kansas City, I was surprised at how well he was received.
I guess everyone knew what they were in for when they sat down.
He talked about being in Baghdad last year, and how the Iraqis there don't really hate us, but man do we hate them.

"Get between the wrong two vehicles and your dead" he said.
"The US Soldiers won't hesitate to shoot you where you stand".

Then he sang "This is Baghdad"

"Car bombed and carjacked
And kidnapped and shot
How do you like it
This freedom we brought?
This is Baghdad"

Last night I saw the REAL Bruce.

I consider myself very lucky.

2. he's great... did you see him do "rocket launcher"
at LIVE 8 Toronto?

A bit off topic, but he did a Christmas CD several years ago--very traditional songs that you've never or rarely heard in their authentic form. I really enjoy listening to it each year and would never have known about it had it not been for an NPR interview.

Love Bruce....

5. GMBMC is not a native KCer.
besides that Vermeil is a neo-con.
I like to see a little variety, being an outsider myself, but I never have liked the Broncos.

8. I know I was messin with him
And since I am a native Kansas Citian, I have seen a bunch of different coaches for the Chiefs. I don't even worry about the politics of the coach.

I agree about the Broncos. But there sure are a lot of Denver fans in KC.

9. The show was at the newly restored Madrid Theater
Right next door to the Unicorn and the Grand Emporium.

And you can beat up on me about my BRONCOS loyalty all you like.

Heres a few pics that I took while I was in Denver in September for the annual ass whipping of the sorry ass Chefs.

Hi LIB!

13. Some of my best memories as a kid are of my dad and my uncle
having those Chiefs vs Broncos arguments. My uncle lived in Boulder.

Nice pictures. :)

7. How I love Bruce Cockburn, though his work became increasingly bitter
after he returned from S. America.

12. There's a DUer who played with BC in the 60's & 70's.
Billy Burnett is his DU name.

14. I had to miss him last time he played Portland
But he's the only musician I've paid to see more than 10 times.

If you're reading this thread and aren't familiar with Mr. Cockburn or his work, you could be in for a real treat. Terrific lyrics, terrific guitar work, superior musicality. The whole package.
