WASHINGTON — When President Bush accepted Harriet E. Miers' withdrawal as a Supreme Court candidate Thursday, the air immediately filled with fresh advice.

Republican lawmakers and conservative activists called on Bush to return to the model of his previous nominee — new Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. — and choose a conservative judge with stellar credentials and an intellectual bent.

-------------------------------------

Present two choices, one obviously wrong, one just slightly less so, and let them howl about the obvious problem, exhaust themselves, then slide in the now shiny-appearing second choice, to fanfare and congratulations for having done the right thing.

ow ow ow ow ow.

People will now forget to give Roberts the good hard look he requires, because they feel they've won something. Which is exactly the danger.

Bush wants Roberts. How much more need be said?

And why can I so clearly envision Roberts signing Creationism into law? And then worse? A slippery slope ahead of us, step wisely and think 10, 20 years ahead, and tiny losses all along the way. They build up, and that's their plan. Subterfuge, undermining, molehills becoming mountains...

A lesser threat is no less a threat when dealing with these stakes.

Doubt it. He's Catholic. The Catholic Church accepts evolution.

5. Bush wants him.
Truly, what part of this doesn't scream malfeasance? Are you saying that Bush did a good job??

Roberts is a Trojan Horse for Bush's base. It may not show today, it may not show tomorrow, but they're accruing power and positions, and that can only mean one thing.

2. Um, maybe I'm missing something,
but Roberts has already passed nomination with flying colors. So that's all sort of water under the bridge.

3. Whoever the nominee is, (s)he's going to be far to the right of Roberts.
I'm positive of it.

4. Bush chose Roberts because
he wanted someone who would not trigger a filibuster, but wouldn't anger the far right either. I think we'll find him to be pretty close to Kennedy, which isn't ideal, but is probably the best we could expect. The RWers won't accept another Roberts without a fight. They want someone along the lines of Scalia or Thomas.
