Present two choices, one obviously wrong, one just slightly less so, and let them howl about the obvious problem, exhaust themselves, then slide in the now shiny-appearing second choice, to fanfare and congratulations for having done the right thing.

People will now forget to give Roberts the good hard look he requires, because they feel they've won something. Which is exactly the danger.
Bush wants Roberts. How much more need be said?
And why can I so clearly envision Roberts signing Creationism into law? And then worse? A slippery slope ahead of us, step wisely and think 10, 20 years ahead, and tiny losses all along the way. They build up, and that's their plan. Subterfuge, undermining, molehills becoming mountains...
A lesser threat is no less a threat when dealing with these stakes.
