I'm Dreaming Of A BLUE Christmas...VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET!
Attention DU Christmas shoppers, please remember: Barnes & Noble, NOT Amazon. Bed, Bath and Beyond is good too. Post your DEM FRIENDLY gift ideas here, and remember, not one blue cent to the bastards who send it the the GOP!

1. What about Overstock.com?
I recently bought 3 bestsellers there for 36 bucks and 3 dollars shipping. The same thing at Amazon would have cost 76. I know because I almost ordered from there.

If they don't cut their shipping charges they won't survive Overstock.

3. According To This Source, It's OK!
http://www.buyblue.org/node/1629/view/summary

Sometimes the info on this stuff isn't right, but Overstock looks OK to me. I recently bought some Doc Martens from there and looked it up at buyblue. There are other sites like Open Secrets but sometimes it takes forever to find what you're looking for there.

4. I'm not surprised
because they have a very extensive handicraft section from "third world" (I hate that term) countries and many are made from recycled goods. They have these awesome books made from plastic garbage bags that are exquisite. I got some for gifts last year. Also photo albums covered with big leaves. Really unique.

7. Buyblue needs help.

Buyblue is now a full forum site and they've been sending out mailers encouraging people to help fill in their corporate profiles.

Other than the WAlMart folks, though, the stats there still need a lot of work.

FWIW.

6. How we had decided to have a blue Christmas is
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 07:39 PM by CC
kids will still get gifts though they are also included in the major Christmas plans. We are adopting a family that is in need and doing Christmas for them. For those far away we are letting them know that we would rather they donate to those in need and forgo any gifts for us. We had decided this last spring and now are trying to figure out a way to add a Katina family and try to do Christmas for two families. Will say I have decided for the families that we would like to find some with teens since they tend to be over looked.

Stock up on lots of RED at Costco (red WINE that is, preferably from the blue state of CA!)

I got lots of Costco wine last year for holiday gifts & festivities. Really hard to beat their selection and price on GREAT wine.

11. Fuck this capitalism shit, damn it. MAKE YOUR OWN PRESENTS.
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 08:03 PM by HypnoToad
I'm making my own xmas cards and giving out my best prints for people. They last 5x that of a photo lab enlargement and make great wall prints.

And making a good dinner.

THAT is Christmas. Not this "buy it at 9.9999999% off" nonsense. Big biz owners don't give a fuck about politicians or YOU. They care only for money and they donate to both parties; moreso for the party in power at the given time.

Forgive me, but we all spend enough on our own needs and extras. It's time to be people again and not corporate tools.

I have a brand new Barnes & Noble 3 blocks from my home. (I was planning on looking it up on buyblue, because I couldn't remember) It's been my habit to give books for Christmas gifts to extended family for several years now. Buy Blue indeed! Excellent post.
I do wish to add; I think I'll drop a line to the companies I'm buying from to explain why I choose to spend my money the way I do.

Yes I think I will let Barnes & Noble know why they will be my retailer of choice for books, CDs and DVDs this holiday season!

I did write Pier One last year and tell them I was horrified at their GOP donor status. I used to get a lot of holiday stuff there but haven't gone in for two years now.

Nobody think: Oh, it's only ME....they won't care. They DO care. Big time! Look at all the ad money they spend to get us.

39. Target pharmacies also have an anti-woman policy regarding
emergency contraception. Their store policy allows pharmacists that have a moral objection to direct customers to another store (not necessarily Target) rather than fill the prescription. Any store policy should require that the presecription be filled by someone at that store. If no one else is available, even a pharmacist with "better" morals than I should have to fill that prescription.

29. Barnes & Noble, Borders and all other megachain bookstores
hurt literature, the same way Wal-Mart can squeeze suppliers. People should be encouraged to shop at local bookstores and directly from small presses. Whether or not they donate to the Dem party, the rejection of a chain far outstrips the political contributions.

If the chains won't buy it, it often doesn't get printed. The chains dictate far too much what we get to read, to see, to hear.

Avoid the chains all together and head for that local book store.

owners. To be perfectly fair, however,we were stuggling for 4 years, paying expenses but that was about all. Then a B&N opened about 1 mile east of us and people who thought having a cappacuinno while you browse at my store was virtual insanity, found it was the best thing going at Barnes and Nobles.

Oh well,no regrets,it was a labor of love.

Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 11:57 PM by blue neen
The nearest Costco is an hour's drive, so I only go every 2 or 3 weeks. That trip is very worthwhile, though.

They have been stocking great books. I just bought Al Franken's "The Truth." "1776" by David McCullough and the new book by E. L. Doctorow, "The March," are going to be Chrismas gifts for my son. I purchased really cool books for my niece and nephew; educational books and a beautifully done pop-up book.

They had great bargains on giant rolls of Chrismas wrap.

I recently got an eye exam at Costco. The opthamologist was very thorough and was as good as my old eye doctor. The optician was very professional and did a great job of fitting me for new glasses. I had to get progressive bifocals and a year's supply of the newest contact lenses, Bausch and Lomb "Pure Vision." The exam (including glaucoma check), the eyeglasses (with ALL the bells and whistles), and the year's supply of state-of-the-art contacts all added up to only $384. AND, the doctor gave me a free pair of the contacts to try out first! :)

I would have paid that for the glasses alone at my old eye doctor! We don't have eyecare insurance, so I had been putting off buying new glasses for YEARS!

Costco rocks!
