Drug-sniffing dogs in high school...
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 11:35 PM by MarsThe Cat
they just did a story on the local Faux affiliate about a SoCal school that's using a drug-sniffing dog on campus, and how it's a growing(and of course popular- this was Faux) trend nationwide...

personally, i have no problem with 'locker searches' in schools, and i don't believe that students should have the expectation of privacy in their lockers- after all the locker is school property, not the student's, and the welfare of ALL the students, as well as the liability for the school district has to be considered-

that being said- if i were a student at one of those schools and a pot-smoker- as i was in my own high school- i'd walk along the hall rubbing a bag on as many lockers as possible- it'd drive the dog nuts.
locker vents would also make a handy place to dispose of roaches.

btw- they did indicate in the piece that the dog was only allowed to sniff lockers/desks- NOT the students persons themselves.

while i don't necessarily dis-approve of the idea of the dogs...i think that it's a waste of time & resources. Is there a lot of big-time drug-dealing going on in the schools...? that seems like the only real 'threat' this kind of thing would address. and even though the announcer led the story saying that it was about finding "hard-core narcotics like heroin", it's obviously more about pot than anything else.

1. It's bad enough that they let those dogs into high school ...
and now they're wasting their opportunities by sniffing drugs!

More seriously, combine some pot into ground beef, then smear that on the lockers.

5. that's true-
it would be better than getting caught with a bag of weed.

although- what i'd do is put the pot in a bag, shake it up, then put the pot back into it's original bag, and take the second bag, turn it inside out, and wearing it like a glove- walk along rubbing it on lockers...or something to that effect.

2. The problem with this is it's too easy to frame someone.
Just drop a few pinches of low grade grass through the vents in the locker and the local pariah ends up in Juvy.

But they did dogs in my school too. I don't know if it ever worked.

3. that's what i mean-
it seems like a waste of time...and it would be too easy to fuck with either the dogs, or other students.

4. I heard the way to beat the dogs is to rub micro particles of marijuana
and seeds all over an area.... let it get all over the cracks and crevices of a locker or a car. And not just in one area, but all over. Supposedly drives the dogs and handlers crazy.

17. I was in High School as recently as ten years ago...
And WE thought of all kinds of creative solutions for the canine problem. These kids today, on the other hand... oy! Pokemon and Yugioh have destroyed their creativity. Or perhaps I'm just getting old...

6. I'm a high school senior...
I don't use a locker, I carry my backback all day. I also tend to leave my weed at home. That being said, I'd hate to see drug sniffing dogs at school. The money could be better spent elsewhere.

8. Yup, like on the schools themselves.
Is it really worth the effort to bust a couple kids for a few joints? They aren't going to make a major bust and geting high only harms the user, if even them. I've been smoking since high school, hell I'm hitting the bong right now, I have a family I held a good straight job at the same company for the last 16 years, just went independant this year and I am now my own boss. It aint the drugs it's the person doing them...

7. Another joke of the drug war
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 11:34 PM by firefox
One of the worst things you could wish on a child is cigarette addiction yet some 3 in 10 high school students smoke and it is all quite illegal. But have you ever heard of anyone arrested in an instance like this for having cigarettes? If they wanted to catch and arrest them they might save them the health and financial costs of smoking, but there is no real concern with substance abuse. They once prohibited alcohol with a Constitutional amendment and now they advertise it like it is the fountain of youth.

I will agree that there are plenty of illegal substances in schools. Kind of makes you think that prohibition is failing at prohibiting doesn't it? But we get a wonderful police state and it creates jobs that cannot be outsourced with good benefits and retirement and job security. It must be going wonderfully because the media never talks about the drug war.

I am still waiting for someone to defeat this statement though to end my cognitave dissonance- The CIA is the biggest dealer in illegal drugs on the planet.

I wonder if they made the students lie down on the floor and drew guns on them like they did outside of Charleston, SC two years ago at Stratford High School- http://cannabisnews.com/news/18/thread18093.shtml

10. Trains the children
to where they think it is a normal thing to have their things searched. I think it is unconstitutional and it amazes me that it is seen as an ok thing in this day and age. Shows how far we have fallen.

12. school lockers are the property of the school, not the student.
i have no problems with locker searches. any kid that's stupid enough to bring contraband or dangerous materials to school and put it in their locker deserves what they get.

11. They're used as a deterrent.
We've had them go into our schools before. I don't know any that have actually found anything legitimate, but it "keeps the weed at home" as one other poster mentioned.

HA! A ha ha ha! That's EXACTLY what my friends and I used to do... Put a bunch of marijuana detritus roaches, stems, seeds, etc. into random lockers. And yes, it DID confuse the hell out of the dogs. Not a single person was cited for possession while I was in high school... Gee, I wonder why?

It was a real drag, you couldn't get weed usually till at least an hour after school was over on those days!

15. I concur with the person who posted that it's about 'training the kids'
drilling into their heads the notion that they live in a fascist state, are constantly under surveillance, and have no expectation of privacy.

I'm much more worried about high school students who have access to high powered weaponry than I am about the ones who may smoke pot.

18. WE've had a drug sniffing dog for years
It's lots of fun since lots of the kids have hemp bracelets. True story about the old dog. Our high school is on the shores of beautiful Lake Neatawanta (known fondly as Lake Marijuana) and an adjacent park. So the cop lets the dog out for a run, and the dog runs away. The cop gets into his car and drives around looking for his dog and ends up running him over. Sad but true.

A set of railroad tracks runs next to the high school. The smokers sit on the tracks in one group and the potheads gather in another group further on down the line.
