Who authored the Patriot Act and when was it actually written?
It wasn't thrown together quickly as a response to 9/11. It was just suddenly there and waiting for signature right after the 9/11 attack. This AND the Bush Doctrine. Republicans and Democrats alike, who feigned necessity and pressure as their excuse for originally signing this document now apparently have no problems signing for its extension.

4. If I remember, most Congressmen didn't even read it.
It was just offered up for a vote immediately, without a draft being released for review. And the Congress, spooked by anthrax scares & terrified of being unpatriotic, just voted for it sight unseen.

7. I'd like to see if those same signatories signed on for the renewal
I'm not buying that story much more than I buy the excuses by Dems who signed on for the War.

Patriot Act Author Has Concerns
Detaining citizens as 'enemy combatants' -- a policy not spelled out in the act -- is flawed, the legal scholar says.

Viet Dinh has been called a "political pit bull" and "a foot soldier" for Attorney General John Ashcroft. But the 36-year-old author of the Patriot Act prefers to be called an "attendant of freedom."

In May 2001, the professor of law at Georgetown University was tapped by the Justice Department to work for two years as an assistant attorney general, working primarily on judicial nominations for the department. But three months later the World Trade Center towers collapsed, and Dinh was drafted to work on the USA Patriot Act, a bill that would give the government some of its most controversial surveillance powers. The bill, coupled with the government's subsequent treatment of immigrants and native-born citizens, prompted critics to charge the administration with overthrowing "800 years of democratic tradition."

6. I believe you are correct.
Check out this video of Dinh getting blasted by callers to C-Span. He literally is reduced to stuttering. Some Americans are getting informed!

9. Thanks! I'll have a look. Somehow I can't fully believe he was the
author...

Maybe a co-author, but the main author?

8. I believe you are correct. This fascist bastard's mind is so clouded by
his hatred of communism, that he is willing to take ALL OUR RIGHTS AWAY.

What a pig. Time to haul out the guillotine again, AFAIAC.

3. I have read that many of the provisions have been
desired by the RW'ers for a while, and that "drafts" existed prior to 9/11; also that some of it was already written from Attorney General Ashhat's Justice Department. I do know that one of the principal authors was a lawyer named, I think, Viet Din (sp?). He's not with the Justice Dept anymore, he's teaching at Yale or maybe Harvard, one of those.
He was on Washington Journal at the end of last week, actually, trying to defend the Bushites. There was a thread about it, having to do with the C-SPAN callers who were destroying his talking points.

When I posted that thread, I did not know he had written the Patriot Act. It was pointed out in a reply.
