You don't usually fight for appellate court nominees bitterly, especially since Republican Presidents had been nominating judges for 10 years by this time.
The SCOTUS is a whole new ball game.

It wasn't till Bush1 needed to court the right wing base for the 92 election that the fight became pure politics of demagoguery.
