8. And there is no way he will waste his base on this
DeWine needs his base so badly, it will ultimately crush him. He is fighting for his political life, and the only votes right now he can count on are his base. If he comes out and opposes this SC nominee, the religious nightmare PAC that is in Ohio will bring his ass down themselves.

He will duck, if possible

12. Isn't Santorum?
Naw...

Then again, everyone has a 'price'...or at least fear of re-election.

16. Snowe is, but her numbers are better with liberals than conservatives...
She is the most popular senator in the country with a 79% approval rating (tied with Collins)

Among conservatives she has only a 74% approval, and 24% disapproval.
Among liberals it is 79/17.
Among Republicans it is 75/22.
Among Democrats it is 84/14!

17. Snowe will vote with Bush
Ditto Collins

The Democrats are foolish for holding on to Snowe. True she is not the worst of the worst, but she 1) keeps the Agenda of the Senate in republican hands, and 2) never comes through in a pinch. Never.

Also, both Snowe and Collins trade votes.

18. As does Chafee
I truly don't understand the love she and Chafee get on this site.

And they are both up for re-election next year. We should be able to by golly force them to vote against Alito, but I'll be very surprised if either does in the end.

9. The agreement is on somewhat shaky ground
because Dems pledged not to filibuster except under "extraordinary circumstances".

The scenario could unfold as: GOP portrays Alito as a moderate; Dems filibuster; Frist comes out screaming that this in no way can be considered "extraordinary circumstances"; all bets are off.

10. Norm Coleman (R-MN) is Bush sycophant, but he's from a blue state.
If he votes for a hardcore right winger for the Supreme Court, it *will* be used against him when he runs for a second term. He may be able to be scared into backing off.

11. THIS is where polling is crucial
state by state, issue by issue and how it affects re-election plans

15. Well I live in Georgia
Here we have to far Right Wing Senators, and that means there isn't any hope here of pressuring them.

Heck, Chambliss and Isakson are liable to say that he is a little liberal, but qualified for the court.

19. In GA, those Senators have bought themselves another coupla points
with the poll tax (which will surely be ruled as "constitutional" by our fascist SCOTUS).

So when they play to their constituencies, remember that those voters don't include people who can't pony up $20 to buy a voter ID card, or aren't willing to travel the distance necessary to procure one.

Yes, I digress, but worth mentioning yet again.
