I believe the best strategy for defeating Alito's nomination
would be to concentrate, from the beginning, on the moderate republicans who are pro-choice.

We know we have 46 democrats and one independent who will vote against him. What we should do is work to convince five moderate senators that they will probably not get elected if this man overturns Roe vs. Wade with the help of their votes.

Collins and Snow are two that come to mind, hopefully there are more.

1. not just Roe... but the moderate pukes need to distance themselves
from bushCo to get reelected. who are the moderate repuke senators up for reelection in 06 anyway?

2. You don't have 46 Democrats
That's the problem. Some of them, e.g. Ben Nelson, will vote to confirm.

8. Yes, there are others, too; welcome to the saddest sack Dem. Party ever
People here can fight but if you can't count on people like even Nelson for something like this, what the goddamn reason does the party exist for? Social security only? That seems to be the only thing the party can hold the line on. Sad.

11. Unfortuately, Arlen Spector may be our best hope
He's in a tight spot, but holds quite a bit of leverage.

3. I think we have to turn it all back on them.
They are intent upon turning our whole way of life, as we've known it for the past 60 years, on its ear.

Roe v. Wade was decided the way it was decided, by conservative judges, for a reason. Other rights have been decided upon for reasons.

They want to split the nation apart at its seams. I'm afraid they're going to get their wish.

4. What makes you think that all of the Dems
will vote against him?

6. Yes, I had forgotten that there were some anti-choice democrats.
We should also make them understand that we (the pro-choice community) will work just as hard getting them out of offfice.

5. Well, I do know ONE thing
Ole Senator Sanatarium will be driving another nail into his 2006 coffin when he casts his vote for this wingnut nomination. And here he was suddenly trying sooooooo desperately to appear to be more of a moderate - so much for his feeble attempt at deceiving the public again.

This is the beginning of the next campaign. No legislature in this nation, no school board, no town council can afford to have theocrats running the show any longer.

12. We need to make this about the 2006 elections.
Republicans already know they're going to hurt because of their association with this miserable presidency. We need to make sure they hurt if they support a wingnut for SCOTUS.

7. And Most Importantly, Come Out of the Box
stating that the nomination is outrageous and dead in the water. The "wait and see" attitude makes a confirmation fight more difficult rather than less.

10. Right there should have been aggressive attacks on this f/ git-go, but NOO
didn't happen. Not a good sign. Big Dems silent so far. I think you can count on Kennedy and Boxer and the spirit of Paul Wellstone, but you can't count on too many others.

9. Arlen Specter and the issue of stari decisis is one of the keys
Specter grilled Roberts on this issue and I would expect him to be as aggressive with the wingnut nominee.
