Dems reaping what they have sown, re:Alito. |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 11:12 AM by Ready4Change
This post might be seen as an attack on Congressional Dems. I consider it a call to action.
Something I learned in public schools is that you don't give in to bullies. Giving in to them doesn't appease, it encourages. It guarantees they'll come back again, with fiercer demands and harsher threats.
With Roberts, Dems sowed the seeds of Republican contempt. Alito's nomination is the result.
Will Dems allow the harvest of an entire generation of hardline Conservative SCOTUS rulings? Or will those same House Dems cut Alito down, and challenge the Repubs to go nuclear (within a year of the 2006 elections?)

1. America doesn't want this extremist judge. Regardless of reaping &sowing. |
|
The political way to look at this is that the Dems better make sure this fascist doesn't end up on the Supreme Court. The ball is obviously in their court to insure that our court doesn't become even more of a joke.

5. A lot of America doesn't look very deeply. |
|
They listen to talking points, talking heads, and accept that as gospel. (At times, literally.)
On the surface, he looks ok. Certainly experienced enough. It's not until you look at his record, particularly the cases he dissented on and why, that you get a sense of how he thinks.

3. But they can't! I mean- if we actually *used* the filibuster, they might |
|
take it away! Ugh.
I agree completely.

6. Well, at least then the Dems get a shot off. |
|
They need to prove they'll pull the trigger. If not, they may as well surrender.
Heck, even if the Repubs go nuclear, at least the fillibuster will die swinging, rather than on the vine.

4. I agree. The Neville Chamberlain |
|
approach doesn't work well as we can see from the results of years of playing nicey-nice.

7. The REAL reason dems CAN'T use the filibuster |
|
They have to keep that powder keg dry (and squeaky clean) for when the NEXT nominee comes along or for when * decides to abolish SS or the minimum wage (which should be right after the 2006 election), that way when they roll over and play dead, they can say "Well we TRIED but those bully Republicans beat us again--OH WELL!"
:sarcasm:
