GOP's Angle: Dems Are Racist
We all saw Drudge's attack on the 'Scalito' label this morning, saying that it was racist. Now the National Italian American Foundation is demanding an apology for the 'Scalito' label, and the RNC is pushing a clip from MSNBC where Chris Matthews attacks a "pretty disgusting" document from the Democrats that says Alito failed to win a mob conviction in the 80s.

So this is the fight the right was looking for. We thought they wanted a fight to the death on judicial philosophy and the direction of the country; turns out we were wrong. They just want to bring out lameass attacks and call Democrats racist. What a joke!

8. I think XemaSab was referrring to Bush's "approval" rating among
African-Americans: right now it stands at just 2%.

3. That's a recent GOP strategy- and they point to all the Democratic
(Dixiecrat) politicians who opposed integration. Where those pig-headed politicians finally went to when they departed the Democratic party is conveniently omitted.

4. Actually Italians are considered to be white...or of the caucasian race
So it pretty much can't be racist now can it?

The NIAH? I've never really heard of them before and I'm Italian-American. Maybe I'm just not "Guido" enough...

5. The RNC trots this out everytime a RW minority is introduced
Trying to shift focus from ideology to ethnicity. It never works, and won't fly this time.

14. Nationality is not ethnicity.
But then, Republicans, being racists really wouldn't quite understand the difference - they are bigots about nationalities too.

6. Not surprising
This is how they draft conservative immigrants and minorities to their cause anyway. I see it happen all the time here.

9. They think they're being clever.
They think that the chutspah on their part will be so unexpected that the dems and liberals' collective brains will freeze. Its a desparation move motivated out of desparation more than anything else and they hope that they won't get caught.

10. If Drudge wants to talk to some genuine
racists, he could start by calling Senator George Allen. Then he could contact my wingnut relatives on the East coast who can barely make it through a sentence without throwing in a racial slur.

Every racist I know is a proud member of the GOP. These idiots have one hell of a nerve.

13. Yep. . .this is the kind of fight they really wanted
and someone needs to point out to the Republicans that their race-baiting is hardly meaningful given Scalito's record. . .and then ask the American people how Republicans could whine about racism when they've screamed for years that their own support from people like Rev. Moon and the KKK isn't an example of racism at work.

They will all be echoing the same talking points. We need to be on point, very positioned, ready to counter every news column, every pundit broadcast, and blast the wingnut media over their refusal to talk judicial philosophy at every turn.
