Abstinence or cancer cure - Guess which one conservatives choose
In an excellent column Ellen Goodman adds to the growing evidence that the only thing conservatives want to do is force their religious beliefs on the nation via law changes and an intimidation of Science, and do so in a tax exempt status. A cure for cancer is on the horizon but religious zealots oppose funding it because "the disease (cervical cancer) is 100% preventable with proper sexual behavior."

As Ellen correctly ends her column

"I always thought it was a bit much to talk about a "Taliban wing" of the Republican Party. After all, the real Taliban stoned women to death if they had sex out of wedlock. What sentence would our Taliban choose? Cancer?

1. These crackpots
are asking women to assume whoever they marry will also have practiced abstinence. Seems pretty unreasonable.

That said the whole attitude is chilling. What next? Forget about dental care since all anyone has to do is practice good dental hygiene and they won't have dental problems? This attitude can be used to justify not supporting many things. But they focus on the sexual behaviors of women - nver mind about men.

I hate these people.

The religious right thinks unmarried sex is worthy of death.

3. it's funny that they want their narrow little worldview
to apply to everyone else.

I guess we should also get rid of seat belts because only people who break the law get into deadly accidents.

We should also deny people who have been harmed by being in the wrong place at the wrong time access to the emergency room since all of that could have been avoided by staying at home and praying.

I think they should have their children taken away from them. They are a danger to themselves, but more importantly to their children.

4. Sadly, what it comes down to is...
These people truly believe that if you don't share their world view and tribal taboos, you deserve unhappiness, pain, and death.

Charming bunch, aren't they?

5. Anyone who thinks ANY kind of cancer is 100%
preventable is fooling themselves. Sexual activity may increase the risk but there is still going to be a percentage of virgins who contract it, just as there is a percentage of lifelong non-smokers living in non-smoking homes who contract lung cancer and emphysema.

And their stance does not take into account women who have been raped or even those who have married then divorced or widowed and married again.

But then, theirs is a death cult. It's based on a death (and please don't tell me it's based on the resurrection because you can't resurrect if you ain't dead), promises rewards only after death and prefers death over sex.
