Bizarre oil politics. Venezuela=bad. Saudi Arabia=good. |
|
If the stories about New England making deals for affordable heating oil from Venezuela are true, I say kudos to all involved.

3. Maybe some day they'll get anti-neoliberal leaders in those countries |
|
and they'll care more about reducing misery and building sustainable, socially-valuable economic growth, rather than about concentrating as much wealth as possible into as few hands as possible.

Saudi Arabia is a classic co-opted country. Venezuela has committed the sin of allowing its resources to benefit its people.
Also Venezuela is a democracy and S. Arabia is far from it. Now why would Bush the liberator scowl at a democracy while chumming up to the Saudis? This tells you exactly what these fascists are.

5. (aside) Venezuela is an OPEC member. Negotiation with OPEC nations |
|
have been a standard of most US administrations. Seems like we now have a double standard. If there is no negotiation with Venezuela because of their politics, we stand to lose a valuable resource ally here in our own hemisphere.
Of course, the political and social policies of Saudi Arabia are rarely challenged, or held as an issue, at the table of international oil policy negotiations.

6. A threat to national energy security |

Good post.
Bush's spat with Hugo is threatening our energy supplies. Private interest before the public good.

7. Yeah, Saudi "reserves" set the price, but Venezuela "supply" ought to be |
|
a big card if we're serious about the issue. You've got it right, private interests have been placed before the public interest.

Chavez is a dictator and is harboring Al-Qaeda, according to freepers. That's a big difference, right there.
