Tonight's big winner = Al Sharpton (late due tivo)
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 10:29 PM by cheezus
My wife and I had finally moved from undecided to Edwards, but we've moved again after tonite. The Edwards campaign was promoting "Debate Watch Parties", so I expected something special out of the Senator, but I didn't see it. Dennis Kucinich once again reminded me that he most reflects my values, but the clear winner was Al Sharpton.

The Reverend took it to Bush in a manner that was clear and nearly obvious. He called Bush a LIAR! Oh my god, I've been waiting for that.

I'm stongly ABB, and I think we have a very strong field of canidates. I decided on Edwards after watching all the NH cspan coverage because he was the only one who spoke to me. In this debate Al Shapton spoke to me.

I'll be caucusing in ND on Tuesday, and at this point I'm thinking strategy. I'd like Kerry, Edwards, Dean (and even Clark OK) to be the candidate. I'll proudly campaign for any of these canidates. My preferece isn't that huge. But I want the Wellstone wing of the democratic party to be represented at the convention. And of all the canidates I find that Dennis makes the most sense and would be the best president, but Al does the best of job of raising the issues that are imporant to be, and does the best of being the clear, sensible, opposition.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. I'd like most to hear the opinions of:
1) Edwards is different and better than Kerry/Dean/Clark - really!
2) Strategic voting as far as giving DK/RevAl power at convention
3) People with TiVo - it made the debate awesome!

Edit: I'd just like to add that I miss Carol. She spoke right to me every time she opened her mouth.

1. Agreed, Sharpton was fantastic.
Why can't he be a white businessman instead of a black reverend?

(that's not racist, it's an honest statement. If a white guy said what Sharpton said, he'd be polling WAY above 1%)

2. I overheard a white lady today say that Sharpton had taught her that she

is indeed a racist, and went on to say some things very similar to your comment. Her conclusion was, if he does nothing else, he will make it damn hard for white people to continue to talk about how much "progress" has been made regarding race relations in the US.

He may do for white people what the OJ trial did for non-whites.

(For those who are not aware, during the OJ trial, opinion of whether OJ was guilty or not was split almost completely along racial lines, with almost all whites saying guilty and almost all non-whites saying innocent (at least of that particular crime ;))

When you listened to people talk, a lot of the comments from whites sounded very similar to things you would have heard from white people in Alabama in 1963.

There was a similar epiphany for many non-whites after 9-11, when the veneer was stripped away, and many people living in the US learned overnight who their friends are.

3. If only we could combine DK/Rev
I think they should team up and say whoever gets the nomination will name the other as VP. Then join their campaigns against evil.

sigh. only in my dreams.

4. I agree 100%
and isn't that an incredibly sad statement from the wealthiest country on earth!

I also agree that I miss Carol, another breath of fresh air.
I'm with Dean all the way though because it is important that he continue to be heard as long as possible - In some eyes hes "unelectable" but I'm tired of smoke and mirror politics that do not get much beyond fancy speeches. He speaks with common sense on real issues, domestic and foreign, and hes the only one that makes sense with big picture "why" behind his positions. Of course that does not translate well into infotainment news sound bites aimed at a hypnotic audience. I think Ben Franklin would have really related to him, and that for me says it all.

5. I agree, a sad statement.
The fact that race still makes a difference is just one more reason I'm looking forward to our future. My son is even less conscious of race than I was at his age. I believe that someday we'll get to the point that it truly doesn'r make a difference.

6. Sharpton was really good
going to make SC tough on Edwards... which in turn will make every other state tough on Edwards since he'll have to stay in SC to try and win it.

They should bring Sharpton onto Crossfire and let him shove that bowtie up Tuckers ass.

7. Edwards has a higher labor rating than anyone but Dennis. That's
based on the percentage of times he's voted with the AFL-CiO. I think he's at 94%. Kerry's at 90%. Edwards is also much better on civil rights than anyone but Dennis. Outside of Dennis, he's the only one asking about the post-9/11 detentions.

8. Al Sharpton was mucho caliente ...
DAMN he was afire ! ...

I think the Tawana Brawley episode hurt his image early on ... But he certainly has grown larger in my mind lately: .. he is almost always right on target ... and was 100 % tonight ...

I personally like all the candidates, and will vote gladly for whomever wins in the end: ... but its REALLY wonderful to have a guy like Sharpton lay it all out there, and make it 'real' for tens of millions of citizens ....

Poor Joe was pathetic ... His shameless and undeserved self-promotion was hard to watch ...
