Why the South is so important
OK, Kerry might be able to win the election without the South. But the reason it is so important to elect a candidate that can at the very least be competitive there is so that * has to spend time and money in the region.

If we nominate a candidate that gives up on the South right away Bush will allocate all his resources to states like WI, PA, Iowa, etc. and Kerry will have to not only try to win FL, OH, MO, but defend the "Gore" states vigorously.

With Clark/JRE it's * that has to protect states like AK, SC, LA, TN, KY.

1. Great point
You didn't even mention CA. If we don't have CA and the south, we'll have no chance at winning.

2. The south scares me to DEATH!!!
Honestly, I don't know what the Democratic party is going to do without a strong presence in the South.

Heck, I'll vote for Edwards if he gives us a chance. Even if he is a crazy lawyer. :)

5. Too late
Unfortunately we won the Civil War. It's the old law of unintended consequences.

Maybe we could arrange a late armistice agreement with the Confederacy getting Florida back.

3. Correct
Kerry as the nominee should vigorously contest Florida and at least one other southern state of his campaign's choosing. If Edwards or Clark were nominated, I would play hard in Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana and Virginia. North Carolina should be contested only if Edwards is the nominee.

6. Don't forget West Virginia
We have to take that state this time. I think Clark or Edwards would do very well there.
