GREENVILLE, S.C. - Democratic rivals vying to replace President Bush (news - web sites) edged closer to a new round of primary contests with front-runner John Kerry (news - web sites) defending his Senate record in a presidential debate and insisting he will not ignore the South.

Just five days ahead of South Carolina's first-in-the South primary, Kerry drew the sharpest criticism from a defiant Howard Dean (news - web sites).

But the 90-minute debate Thursday night generally was low key, with the seven candidates restating positions that have become staples of their campaigns.

Most will meet again Friday at a forum with working families in Columbia.

more...This kind of story just ruins the Freepers day. They thought they had a lock on the south.
