Dean Sees Drop in Campaign Fund Raising
WASHINGTON (AP) - Howard Dean's record campaign fund has dropped from $41 million to around $5 million, forcing him to cut costs as new front-runner John Kerry's fund-raising fortunes rise.

Contributions slowed dramatically in the hours after Dean replaced campaign manager Joe Trippi on Wednesday <snip>

Dean's belt-tightening came as Kerry raised more than $500,000 over the Internet in the two days since his New Hampshire victory Tuesday night.

<snip>

Kerry's best day online before his Iowa victory last week brought in just $50,000 to $60,000, spokesman Michael Meehan said. In all, he has raised more than $1.6 million over the Internet since the Jan. 19 caucuses.

comment: looks like ZKerry is co-opting Dean's fund raising tactics now!

I fear the end is near for Dean.

2. Eh ...
Contributions slowed dramatically in the hours after Dean replaced campaign manager Joe Trippi on Wednesday

That's why the tally's gone up by 150k in the last 24 hours?

21. No doubt that is true
I've seen it firsthand.

But completely ignoring Clark is really ticking me off.

Kerrys fantasy camp appears to have convened.

28. Yeah
The media has ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT on anything. Nope. None at all.

Were you saying the same thing when Dean was being shown as the front runner?

It's a shame about his early demise though.

5. Dean's obit has been written several times before
He's in at least until super Tuesday in March. And my gut says we'll be at the convention.

As much as it might annoy some, Dean and his supporters aren't going to just hang it up and join the "Kerry is God" party.

:D

7. this shouldn't be a shock to anyone
If you don't win the first two states, the people who donate are going to want to see results before they pony up again. Especially with the way the Dean campaign has mismanaged their funds.

9. Oh, look, a new Meme
Dean mismanaged our funds.

How did you get the memo before the cable network guys? You must have some connections.

He spent $15 million of it, not all of it in IA or NH. He also had several bad turns of events, including the entire media fabrication of the scream speech which completely torpedoed his changes in N.H., and destroyed any changes he had to recovering from whatever mistakes were made in Iowa.

So, yes, I blame our Great Patriotic Media

Whether he spent is wisely or foolishly will be played out in the next few weeks.

* Dukkakis' Lt. Gov. * More Liberal than TEK * Iraq War Weasal *

Yes, there's something about Kerry to piss off just about everybody, both general election voters and the other Democrats who's support he'll need to successfully re-enact 2000+Florida.

I can't wait for the ads about the babies being tossed out of their incubators in GWI, while Sen. John "Teddy" Kerry voted against the war.

Let the fun begin, but don't come whinning to us.

I can only hope that what I believed is true for Dean will be true for Kerry: that every attack will only further motivate the ABB, toss-him-out crowd sufficiently to overcome the energizing issues of gay marriage and family values on the far right.

17. John Kerry knows a thing or two about ships...indeed he does
I am more sorry that Dean's fund raising will continue along unabated and he will go all the way to the convention with many delegates and an agenda not guaranteed to bring success in Nov.

26. Why aren't they focusing on where the money went?
I heard on NPR yesterday that most of the money went to shoring up large grassroots organizations in the states like South Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Michigan, et al. Dean's campaign has been consistently spending money in those states WAY AHEAD of the other candidates and he started two months ago.

I believe that Dean is ahead of the curve on this one. Whereas other candidates were scrambling to put together forces in Missouri after Gephardt dropped, for example, Dean already had a campaign in place there.

I still see Dean's campaign as revolutionzing "Washington politics".

30. The campaign in those states show no results.
The spending outside IA and NH has had little or no effect for Dean. He is unlikely to win even one state next Tuesday.

34. Everyone will co-opt Dean's fund raising tactics from here on
It was a successful model, it was also inevitable that someday a candidate would realize the value of the web.

It would be a shame for Dean supporters to abandon him now but I can understand how it must be frustrating to feel like your previous contributions were for all intensive purposes set on fire.

And some will be more successful than others.

I believe the top reason Dean has been so successful with it has as much to do with his general campaigning style as the mechanism itself, however.
