Warner Signs Executive Order Protecting Gays In Hiring

One more smart and honorable thing this Governor has done. In Virginia, no less. Just keeps adding up, doesn't it?

To those of you who keep harping on his DLC affiliations: your objections are becoming more and more of a joke each passing day.

Warner gives gays protection in state hiring

By the Associated Press
December 17, 2005
RICHMOND, Va. -- Conservative lawmakers and activists say they will work to block a new Virginia policy that for the first time bars state agencies from discriminating against gays in hiring and promotions.

Gov. Mark R. Warner, a Democrat who is considering a run for president in 2008, quietly made the change Friday by amending an executive order. The policy went into effect immediately. And Gov.-elect Timothy M. Kaine, also a Democrat, plans to keep the policy when he is inaugurated Jan. 14.

Kaine "believes that policies that include principles of tolerance and diversity are what make our commonwealth as strong as it is," Delacey Skinner, a spokeswoman for the governor-elect, told The Washington Post.

But several lawmakers and activists were already promising a fight. The General Assembly could pass legislation blocking the order. And if Kaine refused to sign it, it would take two-thirds of state legislators to override his veto.
