General’s orders: Exclusive interview
(plus a cover photo!...and this one:))

snip

Clark spoke to The Advocate the day after Al Gore endorsed the candidacy of former Vermont governor Howard Dean—a move that Clark shrugs off as having more to do with Gore than with Dean—the same day two retired brigadier generals and one rear admiral came out of the closet in The New York Times, a move Clark says deals significant blows to “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

So you support Massachusetts’s calling it marriage?
Yeah, absolutely.

How do you think Congress would react to that?
Well, they’ll love it. This is exactly what they’re looking for. Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay and all those guys are looking for a real hand grenade to throw into the Democratic Party. It’s an absurd issue, and it’s one of the reasons I’m running. No one can accuse me of being soft on defense, and no one can accuse me of not knowing about what the armed forces are about. And when I say, “It’s OK,” then it’s OK, period. But elections aren’t always about common sense. And I think would love to frighten people.

1. Good for the General!
I am sick and tired of folks side stepping issues of civil rights and the freedoms that are the birthright of citizens of this country under the constitution. We all have to just make up our minds that it is a stupid position to hold that your rights are determined by what makes you get a "woody". I like Clark's stand on this issue.

2. This impressive man is being marginalized by the media and it's a shame!
I have no vote (I'm not American), but I have welcomed his intelligent comments about world affairs (he wants to mend fences with your former allies, for one) and he has progressive social ideas. As a military man he KNOWS the consequences of the foolhardy actions of the Bush administration with regards to Iraq etc....IMO

6. Nice spin......

Your snipping changed the meaning of what Clark actually said . He didn't endorse gay marriage. Just before he said this :

So you support Massachusetts’s calling it marriage?
Yeah, absolutely.

he said this:

"I support whatever the state says.

If the state of Massachusetts says we’re going to form a civil union but we’re going to call it marriage, then as far as I’m concerned, that’s marriage. "

I believe that there are at least 25 states that have already banned gay marriage and more are attempting to. Clark's statement , when taken in context, certainly isn't an endorsement of gay marriage or Constitutionally protected civil rights.

8. Your spin is just as impressive.
The original poster never said that Clark endorsed gay marriage. You seem to have interpreted that meaning when all that was quoted was Clark agreeing that Massachusetts can call it "marriage" if they chose.

Clark has likely been the most openly-supportive candidate where gay rights are concerned. He has shown no resistance and no fear whatsoever in pushing for civil rights and protections for gay and lesbian couples.

9. I believe he exemplifies truly intelligent and enlightened people with his
open support of gay rights....Only ingnorant, backward thinking people oppose gay rights....By the way I'm not gay, am married with children and 2 grandchildren.....But what is right is right....:)

10. Wrongo
He believes that everyones civil liberties should be guaranteed, including all of the rights and benefits of marriage.

What the state chooses to call that civil arrangement is up to them. Mass wants to call it marriage? fine. Oklahoma wants to call it civil union? fine. It's the rights that matter, much more than a label.
