Maybe some folks out there stifle a yawn when some of that bad news from Iraq interrupts their favorite evening newscast. A big ho-hum to counter those tedious messages of faceless civilians pooled in red on the roadways. A my-way-or-the-highway hardness to strangers whose country we claimed as our prize. An acceptance that stuff happens in wars....and in by-choice invasions crafted to look like essential self-defense.

I get this hard knot in my stomach just thinking about how easy it was for President Bush to take our sadness and anger over September 11th, mold it and work it into some national fervor hell-bent on revenge. A unified onslaught wherever he pinned the map. Fighting them there so we don`t have to fight them here. With Bush or with the terrorists. Killin` the killers, with God`s approval, no less. It was so, so easy. No draft. No casket photos. No civilian death count. Only tax cuts. A regular cakewalk for Bush, Cheney and the armchair PNACers coddled by the luxury of safety and confident they`ll never have to worry about someone blowing off their legs.

Perhaps one morning we`ll be awakened by the truth tap-tapping at our door. No more snoozing. No more leisurely second cup. No more day off from reality. Instead, we`ll find the detours and diversions useless and come face to face with what has been done in our name. I`m hoping it`s sooner, not later. I`m hoping Americans start wrenching in unison and call a collective halt to this dangerous imperialism masquerading as freedom`s guiding light.
