Do you ever get these?
Those stupid chain emails bashing Dems?

I still get the North/Gore/Osama one from 2001.
http://www.snopes.com/rumors/north.asp

It's easy to bust these.
Highlight and copy a unique section of the text and "Google" it.

I sent that one back to my mom stating that, "The smear merchants are busy".
To which she replied, "Both sides do it".
OMG...being a Republican can be a disease...can't it?

1. There is only one side that seems to be "doing it" though.......
ask her how many Republican bashing chain e-mails she's received.

2. Not that one
but I have gotten a lot of them. For some reason the average republican seems to be too dense to look up a reference for any piece of shit they pass along. They also don't tend to respond to any replies that I give them to debunk the latest crap passed along, except for one that replied "Snopes is controlled by the Jews". I don't know where he got that.

They are so self absorbed that they will believe anything that makes them look right. I guess that when you look out the front window and see nothing but an old chevy on blocks and a washer/dryer on the lawn you'll do anything to make yourself feel better.

I really wish that stupid was painful.

3. "The other guy does it" is the quintessential Watergate-style denial.
And it's not true. During Watergate it was .."LBJ taped conversations in his office" -- as if that were analogous to Nixon ordering hush money to be paid to burglars.

I get emails from relatives on all sides of the political spectrum, and it is only stuff from my right-wing cousins that contain outright lies masquerading as half-truths. The missteps and embarrassing moments of Ford, Reagan, Bush, Quayle, et al., were rewritten to have happened to Bill Clinton or Al Gore or John Kerry. Case in point, that ubiquitous email about <any Democrat> saying his favorite Bible verse is John 16:3 -- is a TRUE story about George H.W. Bush and the incident was related by Cal Thomas in one of his books. But you'd be surprised how many think it was Al Gore or John Kerry who said that. To make it worse, GHWB said it in front of a convention of religious broadcasters.

And what does John 16:3 say? And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. Obviously he meant to say John 3:16, but this misstatement was either Freudian, or an act of God warning us about these people.

Anyway, the 'everybody does it' argument is specious and dangerous. Did your mother abide that philosophy when you were a child? I remember that old business about "if so-and-so jumped off a bridge would you jump too?"

4. It's sad when a friendship dies
I got that email today from an old friend I never suspected of believing this sort of crap. I sent him the snopes page. I don't think we're friends any more.

His loss but sad just the same.

5. If I'd said "Others are doing it . . ." to my Mother, I would get in twice
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 11:36 AM by patrice
the trouble: once for whatever wrong I had committed and once for being lead by others and not trying to improve the status quo where it is wrong.

That is childish and I was expected to grow up.

7. 'To which she replied, "Both sides do it". '
I have a comment about this - however I want to preface by saying that my comments are not directed to your mother personally. Please don't take it as a personal criticism or comment about her.

/rant on
'To which she replied, "Both sides do it". ' - I am SO tired of this argument and its varieties! "Well, Clinton did it." "What about Sandy Berger and how he got away with what he did." "The republicans do it, so we can do it." "Well so and so did it." "What about Clinton pulling FBI files on his enemies?" "What about travelgate?" "Well Lincoln disallowed habeas corpus during war." And so on....

This argument is nothing if not juvenile. I hear it _every day_ and I'm really tired of it. It's like listening to 3rd graders arguing! "Well he did it first!" "No you did it first" "No I didn't, you did it first" "No I didn't you did!" "No you!" "No you!"

3rd Grade, right? About 8-year olds?

AS IF THAT MAKES IT RIGHT! AS IF THAT IS ANY EXCUSE FOR DOING THINGS THAT ARE WRONG!!!!

It's not! The fact that someone else did something is NO excuse for anyone else doing it if its wrong! Didn't everyone's parents teach them that? Where do people get off thinking that is _any_ sort of valid argument? It is neither supportable or persuasive! It's nothing more than evidence of a lazy mind and juvenile thinking.

There, now I've said my piece. Thanks for listening.

/rant off

8. I think my aunt has sent me every Dem bashing chain mail that exists...
Her other favorites are the "Put prayer back in our schools" and those Bush-supporting letters from troops in Iraq.
She doesn't seem to notice that the wording is almost identical.

I sent her the link to Snopes, and suggested that she check the validity of what she was forwarding to everyone she
knows, and probably many she doesn't.

It seemed to work...for a while. Now, she's back at it. The "war on Christmas" kept her busy the last few weeks. Now
that that particular horse is dead, she'll have to come up with something else.

I just figure she's like any other catatonic Bushie. I don't waste my time debating people like this. Usually they are too
ignorant to realize they have lost the argument.

During the last campaign, my sister-in-law stated she could never vote for Kerry because he was so "wishy washy". When
I asked her to name a particular incident, she couldn't. Her reply was "Well, I know he is all the time, but I can't think of
one right now." She voted for Bush.

Ignorance.

And now, she is having trouble finding a permanent job, affording her prescriptions, complaining about the high cost of heating her home, and filling up her gas tank. I just tell her that I accept no responsibility at all for what this country has become, since I voted for that "wishy washy" man who should be in the White House today.
