Kanye West: "George Bush doesn't care about black people"

(originally posted on 9/02/05) I don't have the actual totals yet, but an early count of only two servers has this video being downloaded almost 800,000 times in the last two months.

During the Concert for Hurricane Relief, Kanye West and Mike Meyers were celebrity narrators during the segment, West said: (rush transcript)

(fuller Transcript by Tracy& Eric)

"I hate the way they portray us in the media. "If you see a black family it says they are looting if you see a white family it says they are looking for food.

"We already realize a lot of the people that could help are at war now fighting another way and they’ve given them permission to go down and shoot us."

"George Bush doesn't care about black people."

Mike Meyers was floored...

4. George Bush doesn't care about anybody, unless you have a fat......
wallet to make a large campaign contribution to his previous campaigns or to the GOP.

16. That's Obama's take on it
It's not racism, but malignant indifference - West had it exactly right - "Bush doesn't care about Black people" - he doesn't hate them, he doesn't even THINK about them.

Obama declared on the Senate floor that the poor response to Katrina was not “evidence of active malice,” but merely the result of “a continuation of passive indifference.”

5. I thought it was the "Is bush* drunk" since it was posted so many times
here. I guess C&L has many more viewers than here at DU? That was an amazing statement...and TOO TRUE!

6. As a companion to the video clip:
http://www.pkarchive.org/column/091905.html

Just as Kanye West's commentary was a rare, breathtaking and welcome moment of televised truth (which like "television news" is normally a contradiction in terms), so is the above-linked Paul Krugman essay astonishing to find in the pages of corporate media. In fact Krugman's essay is so revealing, and explains so much about the rise of American fascism, I think it is the most important piece of U.S. social journalism since the Civil War -- and maybe ever.

(By the way, thanks for posting the video links: I knew of the incident of course, but saw only CNN's censored version, which was edited to make West's condemnation of Bush appear to be a non sequitur, and thus to make West himself look demented if not stupid.)

10. Amazing that over 800,000 people go to that trouble to hear the truth.
Just goes to show how little we hear of the truth, that we actually have to seek it out to listen to it for ourselves.

14. Personally, I was hoping for the famous "Hanity and Colmes" clip from New
Orleans, featuring Hanity being Hanity, Geraldo Rivera on the verge of an emotional breakdown because of what he was seeing, and a Shepard Smith who looked like he wanted to punch Hanity in the face for what he was saying.

17. I'd give that one a vote for the Smith portion...
...that was about as real as it gets. I haven't seen him since his Katrina reporting, so I don;t know if he's slipped back into his old persona, or if he's truly remained "a man transformed."
