A letter from the Draft Clark movement to supporters of Gov. Dean
Edited on Fri Jan-30-04 03:27 PM by Kbick
An open letter from members of the Draft Clark movement to supporters of Gov. Howard Dean
Common Cause
Do we have the power to change America? Could we actually elect an American President who represents our interests above all others? Can an outsider actually win the White House and change the way Washington works?

Since last spring, you have said the answer to this is a resounding yes and have been working incredibly hard to make this happen.

Please know you are not alone.

If there is one lesson that emerges from this race it's that "we the people" have incredible power. Our voices do matter. People, once inspired, will rise up and take the first steps into the political process to take their country back.

We are the two campaigns built by the passions of grassroots support, not by Washington politicians. Combined, the campaigns of Wes Clark and Howard Dean have mobilized nearly 1 million active supporters and raised more than $60 million from individual donors.

But the road to the White House is not an easy one. Early in our campaign, we had to learn to work with veteran political hands who brought experience fighting entrenched political machines. We joined forces with those who, like Joe Trippi, looked at the latent power of the grassroots movements and embraced the revolutionary possibilities. We weeded out those who couldn't make the adjustment to 21st century politics.

Although we differ on our choice of candidate, we always look at the Dean movement with the respect it deserves. In the quiet glow of our monitors in the middle of the night, we read your posts on blogs and silently nod.

"They are fighting the same fight we are," we say. "We are going to get to work with these people in the fall. There is a bigger battle coming."

We looked at Joe Trippi's resignation with a certain amount of sadness. Of course, on one level, we want Wes Clark to win the nomination and having a competitor's campaign lose one of the few people who "gets it" is a good thing. But on another level, seeing the rise of old-school, traditional Washington insiders reminds us that the defenders of the status quo do not sit idly by. We remember that they are the reason we're in the situation we're in right now.

We remember there is still a battle to be fought in November and we should all ask ourselves who we want standing at our sides when it begins.

We would like you at our sides.

We ask Dean supporters everywhere to take a second (or first) look at the candidacy of Wes Clark.

Wes Clark is a patriot, not a politician. He entered this race for the same reasons we all did: to change Washington and to change America.

He represents our hopes for our country - not just for our party.

If you are not familiar with Wes Clark, know this:

His mom was a secretary in Little Rock, Arkansas. He has never forgotten his humble roots and insisted on a tax plan to help working families - the typical American family will get about $1,500 under our plan and millionaires will pay their fair share.
He put his career on the line and, against the conventional wisdom in Washington and at the Pentagon, pushed for the policy that stopped the ethnic cleansing of more than a million people in the Balkans.
No Democrat NOT from the South has been elected President for more than 40 years but his values apply to all Americans. He personally built his stump speech around his core values of family, faith, patriotism and inclusiveness.
We could tell you more but there isn't enough space or time. We ask you to explore the Clark04.com website and learn more about Wes Clark.
If you like what you see, consider joining us by signing up on the home page

We don't have the luxury of a candidate who can loan himself millions of dollars. But, like you, we've raised a lot of money, in small amounts, from supporters all over the country and we're using it to compete hard in all seven Feb. 3 primary states.

A strong showing there sends a signal back to Washington insiders.

Enjoy the summer in DC. Your time in charge is coming to a close.

We've let you run the country for a while.

We'd like it back now.

Thank you,

Eric Carbone, Brent Blackaby, Larry Huynh, Susan Altrui, Maya Israel, Larry Weatherford, Josh Lerner, Chris Kofinis, John Hlinko, Jean Wallace, Christy Kitchens, Jeff Dailey

...and the tens of thousands of other Clark supporters around the country.

1. Given that Dean finished well ahead of Clark in NH
and given that Clark didn't even compete in IA, why shouldn't this be the other way around?

(NOTE: I like all four of the Dem front-runners and will vote for the nominee, whomever that is, in the GE. I am not blasting Clark or his backers, just asking a question.)

8. I didn't read it that way. I'm actually quite flattered by this.
Is this an official letter? (It looks as if it is.) Has it been sent to the Dean campaign, or is it just circling the Net?

We have to reach a point at which we recognize the inevitable: our federal government is one corrupt piece of machinery.

20. Yes it is an official letter. From Clark04.com
I just thought it was interesting. I sure do wish Clark and Dean would come together for the betterment of this country.

26. It's NOT an official letter.
I found it on the Clark blog.

It's written by someone who posted there. For example, if you are supporting Dean and you go to his blog and then propose a letter to send to another candidate, you would have this letter.

Supporters are supporters and then there are supporters.

11. give the negativity a break.
Dean has as much as said he's not competing in Feb. 3 states, so the letter is specifically asking for Dean's people's support in those states to keep the insiders form running awaay with this election.

Letting Kerry and Edwards have their way on that day is the worst possible thing we could do.....more Washington Lifers taking the reins of our party.

If Dean wants to win the Michigan and Washington primaries, then he's going to need to slow Kerry, and in order to do that, Clark needs to beat him on Feb 3rd in some places, otherwise it's over for Clark AND Dean.

No one is asking them to stop believing or working for Howard Dean, who is someone I greatly admire and supported before Wes Clark entered the race, so from a current Dean and Clark supporter:
go outsiders!

3. gmafb
How can these people say this as they are all second tier decision makers, in the face of the likes of Fabiani and Lehane being the masters of Clark?

Look, each campaign has its demons to put up with, but quit asking us to fold, it's just not going to happen anytime soon. The best thing you guys can do is stick in it and deny Kerry the nomination, then we can talk in Boston.

4. Thats great
Send it to all the Kerry supporters who think that they are going to change washington by electing a Washington insider. Send it to Kerry's campaign who effectively stole almost everything Dean has said or done. I thought americans were smarter than this. Proof of my nievity is in Kerry's Poll numbers.

5. Please!
I hate this "you ran a spiffy campaign, good show and all, but why don't you get with the program" shit.

Leave the Dean people alone. It's not over for them, and it's certainly not our place to claim we are the winning team, we haven't won a damn thing yet, ourselves.

6. Right back atcha :)
I agree we have a lot in common. Seeing that we currently lead in delegate counts, and are running second nationally, maybe you guys could rethink how YOU could help Howard Dean.

It really is US vs. the establishment. I am amazed how many post here when it was supposed to be so different

10. I have a great deal of respect for Clark and his supporters.
I will join them if Dean leaves the campaign trail. However, this is not the time for such a call. We can help each other, in the meantime, however, by maintaining positive relationships.

Take care and best of luck.

16. Likewise!
Perhaps, if the media-made candidates sweep the 3rd states, we should consider offering a Clark/Dean ticket!

But I have *some* faith that the American people will choose thier candidate, and Clark is still strong despite the ridiculous media coverage. It's too soon though for either to give up hope!
:pals:

But one way or another, THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE WILL BE HEARD!!

12. you had me right up until "join the clark campaign" comment
I'm still with Dean all the way, and I think a better way to do it would to form an alliance that would show the hypocrisy of washington insiders like Kerry, Lieberman, et al. I will vote for Clark if he gets the nomination, and I'll vote for Dean if he gets the nomination.

or did you receive it?
I find it insulting to the Dean campaign. I personally don't want to pledge allegiance to any campaign at this time. I want Clark to win the nomination.

15. Not the time for this letter

But definitely time for the mending of fences and striving for the common goal. What the letter says is true, and I hope the sentiment travels not only from Clark to Dean, but from Dean to Clark should that situation materialize.

If, down the road, the demonization/assasination of Dean by, well, mostly everyone, proved too great a hurdle to overcome then I think that Dean supporters will like what they see over here at the other grassroots campaign. Hopefully we'll be fighting for the nomination.

Until then, fight for your candidates!

17. I haven't given up on Dean yet. Clark's my backup anti-war candidate.
Yeah, yeah, I know, Dennis or Al should be, but I'm trying to be a bit realistic.

If it comes down to it, I'll throw my support ($$) to Clark. A better man, and candidate, than either of the two pro-war shills.

18. For What It's Worth...
...Clark is now my "confirmed" # 2 choice. Should Dean decide to drop out of the race, the General would be my candidate. Should Dean & Clark ever decide to pool their resources,in what ever configuration, I'm all for it. Should this primary go all the way to Boston and Clark emerge the nominee, I'll gladly vote for him.

Having said that, I must decline your invitation for the time being. Dean remains the best candidate in this fight against fascism and he has my support as long as he is in the race.

22. A letter to Clark supporters from Dean supporters.
Wake up!

Your boy was only inserted in the race to stop Dean. Now that Kerry's in the lead, he's yesterday's news, the DLC rues the day they brought him into the race, and corporate media wants to end his candidacy as soon as possible.

Dean got knocked around for an entire month and still got more than twice the votes Clark got.

25. I don't think this letter belongs here.
This is a letter that is ON the Clark site, speaking to Dean supporters who are CHECKING OUT Clark. If they're thinking about switching, and actively seeking out information on Clark, this letter is a fine way to WELCOME THEIR INTEREST. But to put it out among Dean supporters who have no intention of switching is... well, just tacky. IMHO.

I know, as a Clark supporter, I'm fully committed to my guy, unless and until HE says he's out. I expect a great many Dean supporters' commitment to their guy is every bit as strong as my commitment to my guy. I'd feel insulted if somebody came to ME with this, I suspect they'll feel the same. Again, it would be different if I was going to the Dean site, LOOKING for information to help me to decide if I should switch, but to shove it at me when I'm NOT looking for that is rude.

Again, IMHO.
