Can someone explain the "delegate scorecard"?
Okay, I'm ignorant. :dunce: I don't understand the "delegate scorecard" such as the one they have on CNN.com. How can the candidates have delegates in states that haven't had their primaries yet? And what is the difference between a "pledged" and "unpledged" delegate? And what, by the way, is a "superdelegate"? Thanks!

Superedelegates and unpledged delegates are one and the same. They are all Democratic members of Congress and several other top Democratic leaders. They serve as delegates at the convention. They can change their vote at anytime. Hence, they are often called "unpledged delegates".

Superdelegates can declare support for a candidate at anytime. That is why candidates currently have delegates in states that haven't had primaries or caucuses yet.

3. Thanks!
:hi:

So, do all states have both superdelegates (unpledged) and regular (pledged) delegates? What does it mean that Dean is leading in the delegate count (assuming he still is)?

4. Anytime
Yes all the states have both type of delegates.

Dean is currently leading because of his advantage among superdelegates that have already announced their support. If he fails to win delegates via the ballot box that advantage will be erased. Moreover, several superdelegates have threatened to jump ship if he does not win somewhere soon.
