Balance of power shifts back to Democrats (Maine House) |
|
Rep. Joanne Twomey (D-Biddeford) had dropped her party affiliation last November and become unenrolled. Yesterday Barbara Merrill (I-Appleton) also left the party which created a split in the Maine House (73D-73R-4I-1G) and was going to lead to a powersharing agreement between the Democrats, who have controlled the chamber for 10 years, and the GOP. However, as the agreement was about to be announced, Rep. Twomey stood and announced that she was rejoining the Democratic Party to prevent the power split...
The Democrats are now back in the majority. The GOP and the Christian Wrong can go stuff themselves :)

This off and on majority has been a real ride, but I worry that it is indicative of deeper cracks. Baldacci needs to get his house in order...literally.

5. The Green in question is no friend of the Democrats |
|
He is pissed, and with good reason, IMHO. The Democrats redistricting plan split his district which diluted his support. Both the Democrats and Republicans are very afraid of the Green movement in this state, considering there are more people who are "Independent" or "Unenrolled" than there are in either party. And third parties have always done well here (Maine's the only state where Bush Sr. finished third in 1992) so neither side is eager to give any third party candidate a life much longer than one term...
