I didn't see it myself - it's from a post buried in another thread,
there are a number of responses there:

11. On Sundays Meet the Press.....
William Safire (Republican) told Tim Russert that his office and home phone were tapped by the NSA. He was extremely unhappy about that. It was interesting to see him be so upset. He would have probably been on the side of Bushco, if it had not happened to him personally. Very funny. I will have to look for a transcript of the show and see if it was changed at all.

4. Good, it always takes this stuff a little time to sink in
It took Congress nearly 2 years to realize that they, too, had been targeted by Nixon's Dirty Tricks squad and that they'd likely had their tax returns examined, their phones tapped, their mail read, and all the other stuff the last fatally paranoid administration did to friend and enemy, alike.

This will eventually sink in on the GOP side of the aisle, as every member of Congress who's had his arm twisted over some bit of egregious legislation by threats of revealing bribes/tax cheating/mistresses/what have you to the general public starts to realize where Rove & Co. got all their juicy gossip.

It wlll happen, though. Even GOP Congressmen aren't utterly dead above the neck although they do seem that way from time to time.

12. The way of a Republican
It happened to him, so it's not cool.

And after all that water he carried. Poor Mr. Safire.

So, are we to feel sorry for this.. this.. terrorist!?

He must be, after all, because BushCo would never, NEVER just wiretap someone if it didn't have to do with 9/11 and keeping us all safe from the next terrorist attack, which is right around the corner any minute now, mind you. Don't forget that. Any minute now. The only thing between it and you is our strong presnit.

28. And why are they telling us?
Doesn't Safire know that by revealing he was being spied upon, valuable information (think Sheriff Buford T. Justice in "Smokey and the Bandit" intoning "valuable evidence") is being given to Al Qaeda and others who would end our way of life. I think Safire needs to be declared an enemy combatant and extraordinarily rendered to our good friends in Pakistan to find out what he knows, and why he hates America so much.

Is that flickering 15-watt bulb coming on for you now, Mr. Safire?

19. It's not easy to feel sorry for a Nixon person who was tapped
THat it's by his own side is even better. Seeing that he and Nixon had plenty of young John Kerry tapes, he should know his values and they likely don't include tapping Americans. Maybe he should have endorsed him over the dictator.

20. Well, boo fucking hoo hoo hoo.
As ye sow, so shall ye reap. The erstwhile Nixon/Agnew speechwriter who was such a partisan and fan of going to war with Iraq has now gotten a good whiff of the BushCo skunks he willingly hopped into bed with. If BushCo had the NSA tapping Safire I really think the complete list of "tappees" is going to be shockingly amazing when and if it ever comes to light.

They will find out that this is how to make enemies and influence people (against you). Never pick a fight with people who buy their ink in 55 gallon drums.

30. Just one more example of how full of shit conservatives are.
They talk "tough" about this wiretapping issue -- "I got nuthin to hide" -- but I bet you if they found out they were being listened to, they'd be pissed. They've taken this nonchalant attitude about this because they're SURE no one is listening.

33. Here is the link and his statement.
MR. SAFIRE: I was writing a speech on welfare reform, and the president looks at it and says, "OK, I'll go with it, but this is not going to get covered. Leak it as far an wide as you can beforehand. Maybe we'll get something in the paper." And so I go back to my office and I get a call from a reporter, and he wants to know about foreign affairs or something, and I said, "Hey, you want a leak? I'll tell you what the president will say tomorrow about welfare reform." And he took it down and wrote a little story about it. But the FBI was illegally tapping his phone at the time, and so they hear a White House speechwriter say, "Hey, you want a leak?" And so they tapped my phone, and for six months, every home phone call I got was tapped. I didn't like that. And when it finally broke--it did me a lot of good at the time, frankly, because then I was on the right side--but it told me how easy it was to just take somebody who is not really suspected of anything for any good reason and listen to every conversation in his home--you know, my wife talking to her doctor, my--everything."

Sounds like he was talking about the FBI, can't tell for sure.

36. When was Safire a speechwriter? I thought it was with Nixon.
He is talking about his time with the WH, because he's working with the president on a speech, and he's telling Safire to get the word out.

Safire does, and gets caught on a wire leaking info to a reporter, so they wire him for six months, listen to every call he makes at home.
