Meaningless divisions and neocon traps...
Atheist vs. Religious: The GOP and the neocons running aren't particularly religious. Evidence for this is found in the Abramoff memo, where he talks about mobilizing the "wackos" among the fundamentalists. The religious are not the enemies of Democrats. Not even the fundamentalists. This is a false, meaningless division and a neocon trap. The members of the whackjob fundie church that expelled all the Democrats were by and large working people getting screwed by the Administration's policies.

It's fun to argue religion and the existence/non-existence of God. It's also pointless, divisive and a neocon trap. We are the party of tolerance, and that runs both ways. What do I care if you believe or not? I'm raising my kids, you aren't.

Prolife vs. Prochoice: The GOP and the neocons running aren't particularly pro-life or pro-choice. The majority of justices who have upheld Roe v. Wade were appointed by Republicans. Bush appointed Roberts to fill Rhenquist's seat, and Roberts assured Senate Democrats he would support Roe. Of course he will. The GOP needs Roe v. Wade to remain law so that they can continue to monopolize the religious, who are duped into thinking the GOP is prochoice. The appointment of Roberts (pro-Roe) to succeed Rhenquist (anti-Roe) and the appointment of Alito (anti-Roe) to succeed O'Connor (pro-Roe) maintains the status quo. The status quo is working for them, so why not?

It is fun to argue prolife vs. prochoice. It's also pointless. Roe will remain the law of the land for the foreseeable future. The GOP is prochoice.

Affirmative Action/race: The GOP could give a shit about race. They are about money and power, and relatively color-blind, except to the extent that race and money intersect. The GOP is about telling poor whites they are better than poor blacks. It is bullshit. Kanye got it only half-right. George bush doesn't care about poor people, black or white.

Sexual orientation: The GOP doesn't care if you are gay or not. They deliberately incite intolerance among the hillbilly and fundie straights against gays so the hillbillies will vote their way. The gay marriage bills were not about gay marriage. They were about getting straights to the polls, making people think "liberals" were attacking marriage, and trouncing Democrats.

What are the real issues? The economy. The redistribution of wealth in the tax code from the poor to the wealthy. The war. Illegal immigration and the complete failure of the Bush administration to do anything about it. The deliberate running up of the deficit to create a financial crisis. Corruption.

On the real issues, the Democrats are right, the Republicans are just plain wrong.

Read Lakoff's "Don't Think of an Elephant". If you don't have a copy, get one. Don't read a summary, read the book.

And donate money to your local Democratic candidacy.
